Former President Donald Trump has made a public statement after his legal team met with Justice Department officials on Monday in relation to a federal investigation into his handling of classified documents, as the Conservative Brief reported.
“How can DOJ possibly charge me, who did nothing wrong, when no other presidents were charged,” Trump noted on his Truth Social platform in all caps.
He posted his response mere moments after his legal team was spotted departing a DOJ meeting, an indication that the investigation is nearing its conclusion.
NBC News reported that Trump went on to point out that his 2016 Democratic presidential rival Hillary Clinton was investigated by the FBI for possessing classified information on her private email server but “wasn’t even close to being charged! Only Trump — the greatest witch hunt of all time!”
Trump posted the early afternoon remarks shortly after James Trusty, John Rowley, and Lindsey Halligan were spotted exiting the Justice Department.
The three conferred with special counsel Jack Smith, who is supervising the investigation, and other officials, according to a source with knowledge of the matter. According to NBC News, neither Attorney General Merrick Garland nor Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco were present.
August's unprecedented FBI search on Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, which was widely criticized at the time, marked the conclusion of the investigation.
During an interview on his former network colleague Jesse Watters' "Primetime" program, Dan Bongino blasted the Biden administration and the Justice Department, accusing them of becoming highly politicized in recent years and characterizing the raid as "third-world bullshit."
Fox News, reported that the raid “was in connection with materials that Trump took with him from his time as president.” The outlet also quoted sources who said the “National Archives and Records Administration referred the case to the Justice Department,” and agents “recovered 15 boxes of classified materials from” Trump’s estate, as the outlet continued.
Conservative commentator and former Secret Service agent Dan Bongino weighed in, saying, “This is some third-world bullshit right here.
"Let me say it again, third-world bullshit. I mean every word of that. I don’t care that it’s cable news.
“I was a federal agent, I raised my right hand. And I swore to protect and defend the constitution of the United States. And I love this country. This is a freaking disgrace. A disgrace. We don’t live in Cuba. We don’t live under Kim Jong Un” of North Korea, he continued.
“We live in a constitutional republic. A representative democracy. You have a bunch of FBI agents raiding the home of a former president because they don’t like his politics? Are you kidding me?” he added.
“This is some third-world garbage that happened tonight."
