








A second person has died from Legionnaires' disease in the South Bronx as contaminated cooling towers, including one at Yankee Stadium, continue to expose residents to deadly bacteria.
NYC Health Commissioner Dr. Alister Martin announced the death Thursday night on X, confirming that at least 14 people have now been sickened in the cluster centered on the Melrose and Morrisania neighborhoods. Eleven required hospitalization. One patient remained in a hospital bed as of Thursday night; nine had been discharged.
The outbreak marks the second deadly Legionnaires' cluster to hit New York City this summer. An earlier wave on the Upper East Side sickened 94 people and killed 11, according to the New York Post. That outbreak had barely faded from the news before the South Bronx cluster began claiming lives.
City investigators last week detected Legionella bacteria in 10 of 24 cooling towers sampled across the South Bronx, Fox News reported. Among the contaminated sites: the cooling tower at Yankee Stadium and one at NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln, a public medical facility. Officials ordered all 10 towers drained, cleaned, and disinfected.
Dr. Martin confirmed Thursday night that every tower flagged in preliminary screening has now been disinfected. But two people are dead, and the city is still urging anyone who visited ZIP codes 10451 or 10456 with flu-like symptoms, fever, chills, muscle aches, cough, to seek medical treatment immediately.
Legionnaires' disease is not a mystery. The CDC puts the fatality rate at roughly one in 10. The bacteria breed in warm, stagnant water inside poorly maintained cooling towers and spread when people inhale contaminated mist or water droplets. Adults over 65 and those with underlying conditions like diabetes, COPD, or compromised immune systems face the highest risk.
Dr. Tyler Evans, CEO of the Wellness Equity Alliance, told Fox News that the geography of these outbreaks is no accident:
"When we look at outbreaks of Legionnaires' disease, in New York City, we almost always see it in the Bronx or Harlem."
Evans also pointed to extreme heat as an accelerant. Record-breaking temperatures, he said, increase "the risk of the bacteria basically cooking, getting out to become vaporized, and then producing exposure to other people." The communities most exposed are historically the ones with the least political leverage to demand better building maintenance and faster government response.
That pattern should trouble anyone who expects city government to protect residents equally. When preventable infectious diseases claim lives, the question is always whether authorities acted fast enough, and whether the infrastructure that enabled the outbreak was neglected long before the first case appeared.
Dr. Martin framed the city's response as aggressive. Health Department staff, he said, have spoken with more than 1,700 community members, distributed over 4,000 pamphlets, and contacted more than 140 organizations in the past week.
"We are grateful to our local elected officials who have joined us in outreach efforts as we respond quickly to cut off the exposure and investigate cases."
That is a substantial ground effort. But the outreach began after the first death and after the bacteria had already been detected in 10 cooling towers across two neighborhoods. The question residents deserve answered is why those towers were contaminated in the first place. New York City has had cooling-tower registration and inspection rules on the books for years, enacted after a 2015 Legionnaires' outbreak in the South Bronx killed 12 people. A decade later, the same neighborhoods are burying their dead from the same disease spread the same way.
When the initial cluster was announced, Dr. Martin acknowledged that New Yorkers might have "heightened concerns following the recent Upper East Side cluster." He pledged "immediate action." Five diagnosed cases and one death were on the books at that point. The toll has since nearly tripled.
The Upper East Side outbreak earlier this summer produced 94 cases and 11 deaths, though some reports from the initial announcement of that cluster cited seven fatalities before the final count rose. Either way, the city had a fresh, painful case study in what Legionella can do when cooling towers go unchecked. The South Bronx outbreak started anyway.
Two of the contaminated sites deserve particular scrutiny. Legionella was detected in a cooling tower at NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln, a city-run medical facility. A hospital cooling tower spreading a potentially fatal respiratory disease to the surrounding neighborhood is a failure that ought to prompt serious accountability, not just a cleaning order.
The Yankee Stadium site is the other headline. Tens of thousands of fans pass through that complex on game days. City officials have not publicly identified which specific towers are linked to the two deaths, and they have not said whether the stadium's tower was among those confirmed disinfected or merely flagged in preliminary screening.
Those gaps matter. Residents and visitors are being told to watch for symptoms, but they have not been told which buildings posed the greatest danger or how long the contamination may have persisted before testing began. The identities, ages, and medical histories of the two deceased individuals have not been released. Whether all 14 sickened people lived in the South Bronx or merely visited remains unclear.
When public health emergencies claim lives, transparency is not optional. Sudden deaths remind communities how fragile safety nets can be, and how much trust depends on honest, timely information from the officials responsible for protecting them.
New York City has been through this before. The 2015 South Bronx outbreak. The Upper East Side cluster this summer. Now a second fatal cluster in the same borough, in the same type of neighborhoods, caused by the same bacteria breeding in the same type of infrastructure. Each time, officials pledge swift action. Each time, the cooling towers get cleaned. Each time, the dead stay dead.
Dr. Martin expressed condolences Thursday night. "We mourn the loss of each New Yorker," he wrote, "and our hearts are with their loved ones as they navigate this difficult time." The sentiment is appropriate. But condolences are not a substitute for a maintenance and inspection regime that actually prevents outbreaks instead of chasing them after the first body drops.
The people of the South Bronx are not asking for sympathy. They are asking why, in a city that spends billions on public health, their cooling towers keep growing bacteria that fills their lungs and stops their hearts. That is not a question pamphlets can answer.
