New York Times columnist David Brooks argues that the recent election results in Italy and Sweden send "a big message" to President Joe Biden and the Democrats.
The message, according to Brooks, is that Americans "want control of the borders."
Brooks made his argument during an appearance Friday on PBS's Newshour.
This comes after the recent election of Giorgia Meloni in Italy. It also comes after the Sweden Democrats gained significant ground in the recent elections. What both Meloni and the Sweden Democrats have in common is that they are both right-wing, populist, and anti-illegal immigration.
It is for this reason that Brooks is arguing that President Joe Biden and U.S. Democrats ought to take heed of these election results.
Brooks said:
In Italy and Sweden, immigration is the top issue, as it was for Donald Trump, as it is for a lot of these other — the Swedes have a higher immigration rate as a percentage of population as — than we do, which is — we’re the nation of immigrants. And so, if you don’t get your immigration under control, a lot of people are going to be upset.
"And it should be — it's a big message for Joe Biden, you've got to control the borders," Brooks added. "Americans like immigration, but they want control of the borders. If you don't do it — in countries where you don't do it, the center-left collapses."
This could be the reason why, here in America, we have seen some open-border Democrats changing their immigration rhetoric recently. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), for example, has just said such things as, "we have a responsibility to secure our border," and, "I believe that we have to have a secure border."
At least some Democrats, thus, seem to be getting the message.
