During an appearance on CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday, Senator Raphael Warnock (D-GA) stated that former President Donald Trump was "not worthy of the office that he seeks."
Anchor Jake Tapper teed up the comments, priming the lawmaker to take a swing at Trump, as Breitbart News reported.
“Before we go on, I know you’re about to go preach. You are one of only two ordained ministers in the United States Senate," Tapper said.
"The other way, incidentally, is my next guest, Senator Lankford of Oklahoma. I wonder what you make of Donald Trump’s deep support among white conservative Evangelical Christians. Does it surprise you at all?”
Warnock said, “What I think Donald Trump is focused on himself. And I think that as a Christian, you know, I’m a Matthew 25 Christian where Jesus said I was hungry and you fed me.
"I was sick and you attended to me and so that’s why I think it’s important that we expand Medicaid and Georgia, that we deal with the fact that there are seniors who are having to choose between prescription drugs and buying groceries that’s my north star," the lawmaker went on.
The Georgia Democrat continued his diatribe, saying, "That’s what informs my faith and my politics and I think that the binder that there is a clear choice in the days ahead as we move through this election Donald Trump is not worthy of the office that he seeks.”
On March 11, during an interview on CNBC's "Squawk Box," Trump responded to a number of inquiries regarding his conceivable second term, including one concerning the national debt and the financial burden of entitlement programs.
Long have economists from both political parties cautioned that neither program's financial trajectory is sustainable and that, if Congress does not intervene, it will inevitably result in benefit cuts for retirees due to long-term funding deficiencies.
“First of all, there is a lot you can do in terms of entitlements, in terms of cutting, and in terms of, also, the theft and bad management of entitlements,” Trump responded.
“Tremendous bad management of entitlements. There’s tremendous amounts of things and numbers of things you can do.”
After the comments started to gain traction on social media, the Trump campaign eventually started looking for a way to clarify them.
“If you losers didn’t cut his answer short, you would know President Trump was talking about cutting waste,” the Trump War Room posted on X.
Trump has previously strongly urged Republicans to keep Medicare and Social Security unaffected, and he has criticized several of his Republican opponents in 2024 for wanting to make changes, such as increasing the retirement age for younger Americans.
