Zelensky wants to negotiate peace deal with Trump after disastrous White House meeting

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced his willingness to negotiate peace terms with U.S. President Donald Trump, marking a potential resolution to recent tensions that emerged after the U.S. decided to pause military support to Ukraine.

USA Today reported that this diplomatic overture follows a contentious meeting in the Oval Office, where Zelenskyy, Trump, and Vice President JD Vance clashed over the terms of a peace deal aimed at ending the conflict with Russia.

On Monday evening, the United States halted the provision of weapons to Ukraine, a decision perceived as a significant setback for Ukraine's efforts against Russian aggression.

In the wake of this announcement, President Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the past support from the U.S. while noting the critical importance of achieving peace.

U.S. Announcement Stops Aid to Ukraine

The Trump administration's suspension of military aid followed a heated disagreement in Washington, D.C., during which negotiations regarding a minerals agreement collapsed.

Zelenskyy left the meeting without reaching an accord, sparking concerns about the future of U.S. support for Ukraine's defense needs.

Amid these tensions, President Trump made it clear that further communication with Zelenskyy would hinge on the latter's readiness to negotiate peace on terms acceptable to the Trump administration. The pause in military aid underlined the urgency and gravity of the diplomatic breakdown.

During their Oval Office meeting, tensions rose, leading to an exchange of words between President Zelenskyy, President Trump, and Vice President Vance.

Zelenskyy's refusal to immediately accept the minerals agreement designed to shield Ukraine from potential Russian incursions further complicated the dialogue.

While the aid suspension appeared to be a blow to Ukraine, the European Union proposed investing $840 billion in defense, highlighting the broader geopolitical stakes involved. This development underscored the complex international dynamics surrounding the conflict.

Despite the recent diplomatic setback, President Zelenskyy maintained his readiness to reengage in dialogue aimed at securing enduring peace. He expressed his commitment to promptly resume negotiations and work constructively toward a comprehensive peace agreement with President Trump.

In addressing the breakdown in talks, Zelenskyy acknowledged that the meeting in Washington "did not go the way it was supposed to be," indicating his willingness to move past the confrontation.

He expressed a desire to align Ukraine’s objectives with the leadership of President Trump in pursuit of a lasting resolution to the conflict.

EU Proposes Defense Spending

The suspension of U.S. military aid prompted a response from European partners, with the EU's defense spending proposal signaling commitment to regional stability.

Meanwhile, Trump's allies in the U.S. suggested that President Zelenskyy consider apologizing or potentially resigning to reestablish favorable relations.

Zelenskyy, however, remained focused on reconciling diplomatic differences and emphasized the need to "make things right," underscoring his country's readiness to engage in constructive talks. The potential for a ceasefire in the Black Sea and a resolved minerals agreement suggests emerging avenues for de-escalation and cooperation.

With Zelenskyy's expressed intention to rapidly progress through negotiation stages, there is optimism for a reinvigorated peace process supported by U.S.-Ukrainian collaboration.

This approach aims to pave the way for a "strong final deal" that could alleviate tensions and diminish ongoing hostilities.
