Wyoming Supreme Court Justice Keith Kautz announces March retirement

The Wyoming judicial circuit will not be the same after a career state Supreme Court justice retires from the bench.

According to CowboyStateDaily, Wyoming Supreme Court Justice Keith Kautz will soon hang up his robe, and in a recent interview, he opened up about how he stayed sane and relished in his 46-year career.

Kautz is set to retire on March 26 and said he's "delighted" with his nearly five decades-long career.

Understandably, Kautz saw more than his fair share of negativity and darkness during his time at different levels of the court.

But even with all of the darkness, he vowed to never let it get to him, and figured out a way to keep himself in the light.

"You start getting that view of the world, that everyone is in those shoes," Kautz told Cowboy State Daily this week.

He added, "It’s hard to keep balance as a trial court judge or even as a Supreme Court justice. You’ve got to stay involved in your community, and in life; you’ve got to be around all kinds of other people."

The outlet noted:

So he umpired baseball games. He stayed involved with local school programs and activities. He served as an adjunct teacher. He raised his three children and now, stays involved with his six grandchildren.

Former Gov. Mike Sullivan first appointed Kautz to the District Court bench in 1993. He would ultimately serve in that position for 22 years.

"Being the judge in places where I knew a lot of the people helped remind me that even if it seems routine to me, this is a big deal to them," the state justice recalled.

He added, "To figure out how to solve these problems for people so we can all live together and thrive together – it’s a wonderful thing. There’s nothing like it."

After being passed over for a high court nomination three times, he had another chance but dreaded being rejected yet again. But his wife Karen gave him the push he needed and told him he was clearly the best person for the job.

He was ultimately appointed to the spot in June of 2015 and never looked back.
