White House official says Iran complicit in Israel attacks

U.S. National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby stated that Iran is complicit in attacks by Hamas on Israel.

Kirby shared the remarks with reporters during a briefing on Monday that confirmed the deaths of 11 Americans in the attacks.

The comments

“That said, of course, Iran has long supported Hamas and other terrorist networks throughout the region with resources, capabilities training,” Kirby said.

“And so in that regard, clearly, Iran is complicit here. But in terms of specific evidence on this, on these sets of attacks — no, we don’t have anything," he added.

The president's response

"I have directed my team to work with their Israeli counterparts on every aspect of the hostage crisis, including sharing intelligence and deploying experts from across the United States government to consult with and advise Israeli counterparts on hostage recovery efforts," Biden said Monday.

He added that the situation is "personal for so many American families who are feeling the pain of this attack as well as the scars inflicted through millennia of antisemitism and persecution of Jewish people."

Hostages too

"While we are still working to confirm, we believe it is likely that American citizens may be among those being held by Hamas," Biden said in a statement Monday.

"American citizens still remain unaccounted for, and we are working with Israeli officials to obtain more information as to their whereabouts," Biden said. "My heart goes out to every family impacted by the horrible events of the past few days. The pain these families have endured, the enormity of their loss, and the agony of those still awaiting information is unfathomable."

Over 800 people in Israel have been killed, according to official estimates, with hundreds of people also reportedly killed during the response by Israel's military in the Gaza Strip.

More than 2,000 injuries have also been reported, with widespread damages from the attacks. An unknown number of hostages are also in the hands of terrorists.

The situation is far from over, with Israel declaring war and seeking to end the attacks and free those held by Hamas.
