Vince Coglianese, editorial director of the Daily Caller, has unleashed a verbal storm on California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) over remarks that have conservatives fuming.
This clash erupted after Newsom’s comments on transgender children during a recent podcast, drawing sharp criticism from Coglianese on his show “VINCE” and sparking a firestorm among conservatives on the social media platform X.
It all started on Wednesday when Newsom appeared on “The Ezra Klein Show,” where he expressed support for transgender youth and mentioned a personal connection to the issue.
Newsom’s exact words were, “I want to see trans kids,” and he added, “I have a trans godson,” referencing Nats Getty, a designer and activist, as reported by the New York Post.
Those statements didn’t sit well with many on the right, who saw them as a troubling endorsement of policies they believe harm children rather than help them.
By Friday, Coglianese was ready to respond on his show, arguing that Newsom’s comments carried a deeply concerning undertone, far from the compassionate spin the governor might have intended.
Coglianese didn’t hold back, stating, “Nobody except the cruelest, most demented people in our country would dare say that a child is born in the wrong body.”
He continued, “That we should trans children, that we should put them under the knife or inject them full of hormones. We should convince them of a delusion.”
His point is clear: supporting such interventions for minors crosses a moral line, a view shared by many conservatives who question the ethics of these policies.
Digging deeper, Coglianese took issue with Newsom’s use of his relationship to a transgender godchild, suggesting it’s a misuse of a sacred role meant to guide with traditional values.
He argued that affirming a child’s gender identity in this way contradicts the very spiritual responsibility a godparent should uphold, calling the approach a betrayal of foundational principles.
Many on social media platform X echoed this sentiment, expressing outrage over what they see as Newsom’s troubling stance on vulnerable youth.
Adding fuel to the fire, while Newsom has publicly called men competing in women’s sports “unfair,” his administration’s Department of Education has resisted federal directives to exclude biological males from female sports and spaces under the Trump administration’s policies.
Furthermore, California, under Newsom’s leadership, has pushed forward several transgender policies affecting children, including support for medical procedures that critics argue are irreversible and potentially harmful at young ages.
For conservatives like Coglianese, this is a glaring inconsistency—talking fairness while championing a progressive agenda that they believe undermines biological reality and parental rights. It’s a debate that’s not going away anytime soon, and Newsom’s words have only turned up the heat.
