Trump's lawyers ask court to quash $1 million in sanctions related to Hillary Clinton lawsuit

Former President Donald Trump's lawyers have clearly worked overtime in their pursuit to clear as many of his legal hurdles as possible.

According to The Hill, last week his lawyers petitioned a federal appeals court to quash sanctions that were brought against Trump and his attorneys in the wake of a lawsuit previously filed against Hillary Clinton was tossed out for the lack of merit.

Trump and his attorneys were hit with a staggering $900,000 sanction by U.S. District Judge Donald Middlebrooks in January 2023 over what he claimed was a "continuing pattern" of missing the court.

The former president sued Clinton in 2022 over alleged actions and statements made against his presidential campaign.

What's happening?

Judge Middlebrooks -- a President Bill Clinton-appointee -- at the time of his decision to sanction Trump and his lawyers, made it clear that he doesn't believe Trump and his lawyers should have filed the lawsuit.

He slammed Trump's attorneys for even filing the suit.

"This case should never have been brought. Its inadequacy as a legal claim was evident from the start. No reasonable lawyer would have filed it. Intended for a political purpose, none of the counts of the amended complaint stated a cognizable legal claim," the judge wrote at the time.

Trump's lawsuit against Clinton alleged she and other defendants "orchestrated a malicious conspiracy to disseminate patently false and injurious information" about his campaign.

Trump alleged that Clinton and others acted "all in the hopes of destroying his life, his political career and rigging the 2016 Presidential Election in favor of Hillary Clinton."

Social media reaction

Users across social media reacted to the news of Trump's lawyers requesting that the sanctions be lifted, with many pointing out the obvious with a Clinton-appointed judge siding with Hillary Clinton.

"Trump this, Trump that, Trump's heading to the white house, and that is a fact," one X user wrote.

Another X user wrote, "At some point America’s 2-tiered justice system will lose ALL credibility and become moot."

It'll be interesting to see how the appeals court rules on this one considering how politically charged any case involving Trump is.
