Trump touts 'major announcement,' surprises by delivering two

The curiosity of political pundits on both sides of the aisle was piqued Wednesday when former President Donald Trump teased what he claimed would be a major announcement, as the Washington Examiner reported, but by Thursday, it was evident that he had actually unveiled two major new initiatives with the potential to both amuse and frighten Democrats.

"AMERICA NEEDS A SUPERHERO! I will be making a MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT tomorrow. Thank You," wrote Trump on his Truth Social platform Wednesday, in a post that was accompanied by a video portraying the former president as something of a comic book character.

As promised, Trump did subsequently introduce what he called "Donald Trump Digital Trading Cards," as Fox News noted, featuring a highly stylized image of the former commander in chief in something resembling a Superman costume.

Touting the cards as a must-have item for all of his fans and admirers, Trump wrote, "These limited-edition cards feature amazing ART of my Life & Career! Collect all of your favorite Trump Digital Trading Cards, very much like a baseball card, but hopefully much more exciting."

Trump continued, "Only $99 each! Would make a great Christmas gift. Don't wait. They will be gone, I believe, very quickly!"

Not surprisingly, the unorthodox and somewhat comical development unleashed a torrent of criticism from across the spectrum, with conservative pundit Ben Shapiro tweeting, "Thank God, the digital trading cards are here. It was indeed a MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT."

Longtime Trump foe Maggie Haberman of the New York Times observed, "The speculation from other [Republicans] and even some Dems was rampant that the 'major announcement' would be about his campaign or [Kevin] McCarthy. But instead, it's a quick money-making opportunity trussed up with a meme."

However, in their rush to mock the former president, many members of the media appeared to overlook another set of announcements from Trump on Thursday that do have the potential to reshape what some describe as a presidential campaign that is already floundering.

On the same day he launched the digital trading cards, Trump released a video outlining a free speech platform he would execute as president that would include an order banning federal agencies from engaging in collusion with private entities to curtail free expression, as the Post Millennial reported.

"If we don't have free speech, then we just don't have a free country. It's as simple as that. If this most fundamental right is allowed to perish, then the rest of our rights and liberties will topple just like dominoes, one by one," Trump declared.

"That's why today I'm announcing my plan to shatter the left-wing censorship regime and to reclaim the right to free speech for all Americans and reclaim is a very important word in this case because they've taken it away," Trump added, before outlining specific steps he would like to take in the fight against censorship. WATCH:

As has so often been the case over the last several years, the media's desire to caricature, demonize, and mock the former president effectively blinded them to the need for an important discussion of the many serious policy proposals he has set forth with which millions of Americans would very likely agree.
