Trump targets another Democrat city for federalization

Donald Trump is very proud of himself for “Operation Summer Heat,” which was his crime crackdown that originated in DC. Trump has tried to expand this to other states, but Democrat governors have blocked him every step of the way.

Get ready for another fight, as Trump just announced his next target, and two of his biggest political enemies are in that state… California.

Federalizing DC

So, Democrats pitched a fit when Trump initially said he was going to federalize DC, but you cannot argue with the results.

While many portrayed this as National Guard patrolling the streets like police, that was not the case.

Trump upped the presence of federal law enforcement, and the Guard was put in place to protect buildings as well as federal officers enforcing our immigration laws.

In promoting the program, Trump stated, “Every American has a constitutional right to be able to access and petition their government in safety, and countless federal officials and employees likewise have the right to carry out their jobs in peace without being shot.”

As much as Democrats whined about it, crime stats plummeted, with carjackings being impacted the most. When the federalization period ended, Trump did not ask Congress to renew, but it seemed like local leadership was going to leave the program in place and continue to try to clean up the city.

Illinois

Trump wanted to federalize Illinois, but Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson fought him every step of the way.

DC and Chicago operate differently, with DC having federal oversight, so Trump could not deploy the Guard as easily in Illinois.

Trump wound up using members of the Texas National Guard, which were offered up by Texas Governor Abbott, to help protect federal agents.

The Guard, however, was blocked in litigation, which is still working its way through the courts.

San Francisco

According to Trump, the FBI has nearly doubled the arrests in San Francisco that had been made during Biden’s final year in office, so that is the next city he wants to clean up.

Trump stated, "These are great cities that could be fixed. I'm going to be strongly recommending … [we] start looking at San Francisco. I think we can make San Francisco one of our great cities. … It's a mess, and we have great support in San Francisco. … Every American deserves to live in a community where they're not afraid of being mugged, murdered, robbed, raped, assaulted, or shot."

This, of course, will be challenged by California Governor Gavin Newsom, and it will likely be tied up in court for quite some time, just like the rest of these cases.

That, however, is a win of sorts for Trump. It once again will have Democrats advocating for criminals rather than law-abiding citizens and legal residents. Honestly, though, I think that is Trump’s plan. If they agree, great, but if not, he has them backing themselves into a corner to try to justify rejecting federal help to clean up crime.
