Trump Suggests Congress Could Shut Google Down Over Censorship

Former President Donald Trump has hinted at the possibility of Congress shutting down tech giant Google over allegations of bias and censorship.

The Daily Caller reported that Trump and several Republican figures have accused Google of manipulating search results to suppress conservative perspectives, particularly concerning an issue with the company’s autocomplete feature.

On Friday, during an appearance on “Mornings With Maria Bartiromo,” Trump criticized Google, labeling the company as “very irresponsible.” He suggested that due to these alleged actions, Congress might take drastic measures against Google.

Trump stated, "Google has been very bad. They’ve been very irresponsible. And I have a feeling that Google is going to be close to shut down because I don’t think Congress is going to take it. I really don’t think so. Google has to be careful."

These comments arose after Republican Kansas Sen. Roger Marshall made a formal complaint regarding Google’s handling of its autocomplete feature.

Senator Marshall's Demands

On Wednesday, Sen. Marshall sent a letter to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, demanding explanations about the company's alleged “censorship” surrounding search queries related to an assassination attempt on Trump. He expressed that Google's autocomplete feature did not suggest search terms that would bring up this topic.

Marshall highlighted his frustration with Google's actions, citing a history of bias against conservative viewpoints. He wrote that he was “not surprised” by Google’s actions, given its “demonstrated history of manipulating results and discrimination against conservative ideology.”

He further called for Google to testify before Congress to address these censorship allegations.

Google Communications addressed these claims on X, explaining that the autocomplete feature includes protections against predicting queries related to political violence. They acknowledged that these systems were outdated, leading to the issue Marshall raised.

The tech giant noted that after the incident in Butler, PA, the system should have shown predictions for queries about the assassination attempt on Trump but failed to do so. After spotting the problem, Google started making improvements to the autocomplete system.

Google clarified that no deliberate censorship occurred. The company explained that the shortcomings in their autocomplete feature were due to automated systems that had not yet been updated to reflect current events.

Republican Criticism Intensifies

High-profile Republicans, including Marshall, have intensified their criticism of Google, arguing that the company’s actions are part of a broader issue of discrimination against conservative ideology in major tech firms. They emphasize the necessity for stricter oversight and regulation of these companies to ensure unbiased search results and fair treatment of all political viewpoints.

The issue has drawn significant attention, with many conservatives viewing Google’s handling of the autocomplete feature as part of a wider pattern of suppressing conservative voices online.

Marshall and other Republicans are advocating for Google to testify before Congress to address these concerns. They argue that there is a pressing need for transparency and accountability in how tech companies handle politically sensitive information.

This issue is likely to prompt further investigation and possibly new legislative measures aimed at regulating how tech giants like Google manage and present information to the public.

Google has maintained that the issue with their autocomplete feature has been resolved and that they are continuously working to update their systems to prevent similar issues in the future.

The tech company did not immediately respond to requests for further comments from the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Potential Implications for Google

The controversy surrounding Google’s alleged censorship and bias has placed the tech giant under significant scrutiny. If congressional actions proceed as suggested by Trump and Marshall, Google could face substantial challenges ahead, including potential legislative action that might dramatically alter its operations.

For now, the debate continues as both sides present their arguments. Republicans are pushing for greater oversight of tech companies, while Google asserts its commitment to unbiased and fair search results.

As this issue develops, the tech industry and the broader public will be closely monitoring the outcome of this confrontation between political figures and one of the world's most influential tech companies.

In conclusion, the allegations against Google highlight ongoing tensions between conservative political figures and major tech companies, emphasizing the importance of transparency and accountability in handling politically sensitive information. Both sides are expected to present their arguments more extensively as the situation unfolds, potentially shaping the future landscape of tech regulations.
