Trump Selects Former Space Force Leader For Key Air Force Role

President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Lt. Col. Matthew Lohmeier, a former fighter pilot and U.S. Space Force commander, to be the next undersecretary of the Air Force.

According to Fox News, Lohmeier, noted for his critical stance on certain military policies, is tasked with addressing military readiness and ideological issues alongside newly nominated officials.

Lt. Col. Lohmeier's career includes service as a fighter pilot before he transitioned to the Space Force. He is a graduate of the Air Force Academy, class of 2006. His expertise in missile warning systems was pivotal when he joined the Space Force in 2020. However, his tenure as commander was short-lived.

In less than a year, Lohmeier faced dismissal after discussing his book, "Irresistible Revolution: Marxism's Goal of Conquest & the Unmaking of the American Military," on a public broadcast. He made several public criticisms about diversity, equity, and inclusion policies he termed "Marxist."

His statements led to his removal from command and sparked a Pentagon inspector general investigation. The controversy thrust Lohmeier into the national spotlight and set the stage for his post-military career.

Post-Military Career And Public Speaking

Following his departure from active duty in September 2021, Lohmeier became a public speaker and consultant. He addressed ideological and military topics in various forums, maintaining a focus on readiness and policy issues within the military.

He resides in Idaho with his family and holds master's degrees in military operational art and science, and military strategy. His transition to public life and critique of military policies kept him relevant in defense circles.

President-elect Trump's announcement framed Lohmeier's appointment as part of a broader strategy to reshape military policies. Trump commended Lohmeier's qualifications and indicated his partnership with Secretary of Defense nominee Pete Hegseth to reverse what he described as "woke" military policies.

"Matthew will work with the GREAT Secretary of Defense Nominee, Pete Hegseth, to end the devastating 'woke' policies that have destroyed our Military," Trump wrote in his statement. This nomination reflects the administration's intent to address specific ideological policies within the armed forces.

Lohmeier expressed gratitude for the nomination in a statement on social media platform X. He underscored his commitment to serving military personnel and invited individuals to join the armed forces during a crucial time.

"I’m grateful for your trust, and am very much looking forward to continuing my service to our great men and women in uniform," Lohmeier posted. He encouraged new applicants, calling for the best talent to meet the challenges ahead.

To date, neither the Department of Defense officials nor the Space Force have commented on Lohmeier's nomination. The decision has stirred discussions about the priorities and direction of U.S. military policy under the incoming administration.

Among military circles, Lohmeier's appointment is viewed as a significant shift, especially considering his previous criticisms and experience. His focus on ideological influences within the military could herald policy changes that align with the administration's views.

Background On Lohmeier's Dismissal

Lohmeier's dismissal from the Space Force followed his appearance on "The Steve Gruber Show," where he critiqued military policies and promoted his book. The debate surrounding his dismissal continues to fuel discussions about free expression and ideological balances in military service.

Lohmeier has maintained that his removal was a direct result of his outspoken criticism and views.

As undersecretary of the Air Force, Lohmeier will likely confront existing policies that he publicly opposed. His role will be crucial in aligning Air Force strategies with the administration’s goals and addressing ongoing challenges in defense.

His background and experiences might influence the strategic direction of the Air Force, particularly regarding DEI policies and military preparedness.

The new role sets the stage for potential shifts in military ideology and operations. Through collaboration with other military leaders and policymakers, Lohmeier's influence will be tested in balancing change and continuity.
