Trump says he will not run in 2028

Donald Trump has been poking Democrats for years about possibly running for a third term. I have never taken him seriously, even when he said he was serious, because he had to know true conservatives would never support it.

Democrats, however, has been pushing this as a reason to fight back against Trump, but he just took their ammunition away.

The talking heads

I just saw a headline today that one of the talking heads on “The View” insisted that Trump will never leave the White House.

Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) is another one who has pushed this narrative (as well as dozens of Democrats), swearing up and down that Trump will turn himself into a king or a dictator or some other nonsense. During the 2024 election cycle, when asked if Trump would remain in the White House after his term if he won, she stated, "There's no question.”

She later warned, “A vote for Donald Trump may mean the last election that you ever get to vote in. A vote for Donald Trump is a vote against the Constitution."

California Governor Gavin Newsom has also been pushing this narrative on his little podcast tour (he is actually mimicking everything Trump did in 2024 to win right now).

Poking Democrats

Steven Bannon often talks out of turn, and he is doing it again, saying that there is already a “plan” in place to put Trump back in the White House after the 2028 election.

Bannon announced, "Trump is going to be president in ’28, and people just ought to get accommodated with that.”

He continued, "At the appropriate time, we’ll lay out what the plan is. But there is a plan."

I think the only place that plan exists is in Bannon’s head. For someone who claims to be defending our Constitution, trying to find a loophole in the 22nd Amendment sure is a funny way of showing it.

Not happening

This week, Trump was asked about a possible 2028 run, and he ruled it out, saying that the plan for him to run as VP, then have the elected president step aside, was “too cute,” and that it would upset people (I would be among those who would be upset).

Trump then offered up a possible 2028 ticket, stating, "We have great people. I don't have to get into that, but we have one of them standing right here. We have JD, obviously. The Vice President is great. Marco is great, I think. I'm not sure if anybody would run against those. I think if they ever formed a group, it would be unstoppable.”

He continued, "They have Jasmine Crockett, a low IQ person. They have AOC's low IQ. If you give her an IQ test, have her pass, like, the exams that I decided to take when I was at Walter Reed. I took those very hard, they're really aptitude tests, I guess, in a certain way, but they're cognitive tests. Let AOC go against Trump. Let Jasmine go against him.”

I am a DeSantis guy, but I realize his chances of winning the presidency in 2028 went out the door the moment JD Vance was named vice president. I am not really a fan of JD Vance, but I could tolerate him as long as he does not put Vivek Ramaswamy in his administration, including as VP. I could support a Vance-Rubio ticket, and that appears to be where Trump is leaning right now.
