Trump says DeSantis is 'crashing badly'

Former President Donald Trump says that his top Republican 2024 rival - Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) is "crashing badly."

Trump said as much during a recent exclusive interview that he did with Breitbart News.

"He's crashing badly," Trump said of DeSantis's 2024 campaign.

Trump, here, is likely referring to several different things.

For one, there is this recent report from Politico:

Ron DeSantis’ presidential campaign is expanding the number of staff it’s cutting to include more than a third of his payroll as the Florida governor looks to get his primary bid back on track. The cuts, which were confirmed by advisers, will amount to a total of 38 jobs shed across an array of departments.

DeSantis's campaign manager, Generra Peck, in response to Politico's report, put out a statement claiming "Gov. DeSantis is going to lead the Great American Comeback."

But, it does not seem to be happening for DeSantis - at least according to the polls, which is likely the second thing that Trump was referring to when he said that DeSantis is "crashing badly."

The simple fact is that DeSantis trails Trump - massively - in just about every 2024 Republican presidential primary poll. Real Clear Politics currently has DeSantis trailing Trump - the Republicans' clear 2024 favorite, by, on average, 35.5 percentage points. On some individual polls, the margin is larger.

But, this is only part of DeSantis's problem. In addition to significantly trailing Trump, the polls are also showing that DeSantis is losing to President Joe Biden in a hypothetical 2024 general election matchup.

In short, it does not look as though DeSantis really has a chance in either the Republican primary or the general election - at least according to the polls.

During the Breitbart interview, Trump was asked what is wrong with DeSantis and DeSantis's campaign.

Regarding DeSantis, Trump said, "He’s got no personality. He just has no personality."

Trump went on to predict that DeSantis will soon lose his second-place position in the 2024 Republican field. Trump said:

People said he was a lousy candidate. He turned out to be a lousy candidate. I don’t think he’s going to be second very long. It looks like he’s being superseded by others or getting very close.

This does indeed seem to be the case. Some polls have Republican contender Vivek Ramaswamy moving up to the number two spot behind Trump, while others have former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley there. The bottom line is that things are just not looking good for DeSantis.
