Trump reportedly made peace with Meghan McCain after McCain supported Trump's Panama Canal campaign

Meghan McCain recently revealed that her tense relationship with Donald Trump has seen a significant improvement, following what she describes as a "peace offering" from the president. This change in their rapport comes after years of discord stemming from Trump's past remarks about her father, the late Sen. John McCain.

The Washington Examiner reported that the gesture of reconciliation occurred after McCain publicly supported Trump's position on the Panama Canal, prompting him to express gratitude through a personal letter.

In 2019, Donald Trump criticized John McCain, saying he was "never a fan." This comment, among others, led to a fraught relationship between Trump and Meghan McCain.

In spite of this strained history, McCain recently praised Trump’s stance on retaking control of the Panama Canal, a controversial topic in December.

Trump's Gesture and McCain's Reaction

Shortly after she made this public endorsement, McCain was notified by a text message about a letter from Trump. She described the letter as "lovely," viewing it as an olive branch extended by the president to mend their past differences.

The contents of Trump's letter, while not fully disclosed, included a message of thanks for McCain's support regarding his position on the canal.

McCain recounted that he signed the note with a personal touch, showing a degree of warmth that took her by surprise.

Reflecting on this unexpected communication, McCain expressed her astonishment, describing it as "crazy." This letter marked a pivotal moment for her in reconsidering her relationship with Trump, which was beginning to move in a more positive direction.

The correspondence opened a channel for further positive exchanges between them. Subsequent messages between McCain and Trump were described as "very positive," hinting at a substantial shift in their previous disposition towards one another.

A crucial factor contributing to Trump's altered worldview and this consequent outreach might be traced back to a dramatic event in 2024.

National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard, a friend of McCain, suggested that Trump's perspective shifted following an assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania.

This incident occurred just days before the 2024 Republican National Convention. Trump later reflected on narrowly escaping harm, having turned his head moments before gunfire erupted. This near brush with death led to an evident change in Trump's campaign strategy, which he confirmed when asked how the incident altered his approach.

Meghan McCain's Perspective on Washington Politics

The attempt on Trump's life appears to have influenced his political demeanor, possibly catalyzing a softening in interactions, like the one with McCain.

These developments underscore the broader changes in Trump's public and personal engagements. Beyond this reconciliation, McCain also shared her views on the political climate in Washington, D.C. She expressed admiration for the "vibe" of the Trump administration, contrasting it with the former administration under Joe Biden.

In McCain's candid assessment, the Biden administration exuded an energy that she described as "very old." McCain's reflections signal a shift in her alignment with past criticisms of Trump, aligning more closely with certain political ideologies she now shares with him.

This evolution reflects a broader political narrative where former adversaries find common ground in a rapidly changing landscape.

The letter not only influenced McCain's personal relationship with Trump but also could symbolize a wider political rapprochement, indicating a potential reshuffling of alliances and partnerships in the context of ongoing national politics.
