Trump receives huge applause in Haley's home state at Clemson-SC game

Former President Donald Trump drew huge applause on Saturday when he attended the Clemson-South Carolina game.

The game notably occurred in the home state of GOP rival and former Gov. Nikki Haley.

The details

"Trump was a guest of Gov. Henry McMaster, Haley’s successor," Politico reported.

"The entourage, which entered through a veritable tunnel of Trump supporters on its way to a private suite, also included South Carolina’s senior U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, giving the former president a show of local political force at a game featuring Haley’s alma mater, Clemson, where she is also a member of the board of trustees," it added.

The importance

"South Carolina is a fierce battleground for the 2024 race, as Haley, Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) fight over the former supporters of Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), who ended his presidential campaign this month," the Hill reported.

"An early primary state, South Carolina is expected to be key to any non-Trump candidate’s attempts at unseating the heavy favorite for the GOP nomination," it continued.

Some jeered, but majority supported

"Earlier, some Trump opponents voiced their displeasure when his motorcade arrived at the stadium. But he received a rapturous response from people who massed against metal barriers to get a picture or handshake from Trump as he walked to a box in the stadium," USA Today reported.

"For his part, Trump tossed boxes of popcorn as some of his supporters chanted slogans such as 'We Want Trump!' and 'U-S-A! U-S-A!'" it noted.

The February primary will let voters make their voices known in the GOP contest that currently shows Trump with a large lead in the state.

Haley has excelled in recent weeks in polls and debates but has failed to close the gap against the former president.

The latest Trump appearance at the Clemson-South Carolina game shows that his resilience continues to remain strong in his effort to return to the White House in what could be a 2024 rematch between Trump and President Joe Biden.
