Trump not hopeful for peace between Russia and Ukraine

When Donald Trump ran for office, he promised he would have the Russia and Ukraine war over on his first day in office, if not before he even took office.

That statement was more or less Trump taking ownership of the war, which I stated was a mistake at time, and after his latest conversation with Putin, I am sure he regrets it.

Only I can arrange peace

If you were reading my reports at the time, you know I hated when Trump or Republicans portrayed Trump as the only person who could achieve certain things, such as peace between Russia and Ukraine.

To that point, Trump promised he would have a peace deal in one day, more or less taking ownership of a war that started on Biden’s watch.

Well, Trump has been unable to get anywhere near a peace deal, with the countries continuing to aggressively attack each other.

Much to Trump’s chagrin, he has been called out on his failed promise, now claiming he was just making the point that he could negotiate peace, not really thinking he would do it on the first day. But I call bullsh** on that myself, as Trump said it over and over again, clearly thinking he could get this done simply by taking over as president.

Ceasefire

Last month, it was about as close as Trump had been to getting a deal done, with Trump announcing a possible ceasefire agreement between the two nations.

At the time, Trump stated, "Russia and Ukraine will immediately start negotiations toward a Ceasefire and, more importantly, an END to the War.”

The administration stated that talks were “generally on the right track,” making it sound as though peace was imminent, only it was not.

After a prisoner swap, which really had everyone thinking peace was near, Russia launched a massive attack, which then resulted in Ukraine launching an attack for a plan it had been putting together for more than a year. Clearly, any hope of peace in the near future was over.

Not looking good

After a very successful strike by Ukraine to take out Russian planes was carried out, Putin vowed to strike back, calling the Ukraine strike a terrorist attack.

Trump then spoke to Putin, but he did not sound encouraged that peace would take place anytime soon, stating, “I just finished speaking, by telephone, with President Vladimir Putin, of Russia. The call lasted approximately one hour and 15 minutes. We discussed the attack on Russia’s docked airplanes, by Ukraine, and also various other attacks that have been taking place by both sides.

“It was a good conversation, but not a conversation that will lead to immediate Peace. President Putin did say, and very strongly, that he will have to respond to the recent attack on the airfields.”

This is devastating for both Trump and the party, as the 2026 cycle is right around the corner, and if Trump cannot get a peace deal in place by then, it is just one more bullet for Democrats to use against the GOP to take back the House. I hate to say it, but this is Trump’s own doing for having overpromised during the election, but we are the ones who will feel the pain for his hubris if Democrats take back control.
