Trump is not 'calling the shots' in border negotiations, according to Speaker Johnson

Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.), the Speaker of the House of Representatives, has refuted the notion that former President Donald Trump is guiding the actions of House Republicans with regard to the proposed border security pact in the Senate.

The specifics that have been disclosed about the possible deal that has been negotiated by the Senate have been criticized by Trump, who has also advised Republicans to oppose the plan, as The Washington Examiner reported.

During his appearance on Meet the Press on NBC News on Sunday, Johnson refuted the notion that Trump was "calling the shots" for the Republican Party in the House of Representatives. This was done before the specifics were made public.

“Of course not. He’s not calling the shots. I am calling the shots for the House," an irate Johnson said said during the interview.

"That’s our responsibility. And I have been saying this far longer than President Trump has. I have been saying what the requirements are to fix the problem."

While Johnson was advocating for the House Republican proposal for H.R. 2, he also asserted that House Republicans have been excluded from the process of discussing the Senate border security package.

In addition to this, he stated that he has not been provided with a briefing of the aspects of the Senate's negotiations.

“I’ve had individual senators call and give me tips and offered things that are going on in the room, but we’ve not been a part of that negotiation.

"And I have been absolutely clear from Day One — since literally the next morning after being handed the gavel in late October — what the functional equivalents of H.R. 2, what those are and why that was necessary to solve the problem,” Johnson said.

It is anticipated that the details of the proposed border security bill by the Senate will be made public on Sunday, following months of talks.

However, it is not anticipated that the House of Representatives, which is governed by Republicans, will have a favorable reaction to these details.

Johnson and other Republicans have claimed that the president already possesses the right to close the border, despite the fact that President Biden has declared that he will close the border if the Senate bill is eventually passed.

The issue of border security has been at top-of-mind for many in the political world as political pressures rise during a presidential election year.

President Biden has faced criticism for his treatment of illegal immigration, and former President Trump, has promised to help deal with the issue if he is re-elected.
