Trump endorses Gov. Jim Justice for WV Senate in effort to flip Manchin's seat

Former President Donald Trump endorsed West Virginia Republican Gov. Jim Jordan in his run for the U.S. Senate.

The move is designed to win the Senate seat held by Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin.

Growing support

"Justice has received the backing of several high-profile Republicans including Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), along with support from the National Republican Senatorial Committee," the Washington Examiner reported.

"He is a popular governor in the Mountain State, where he was initially elected as a Democrat before switching to the GOP in 2017," it added.

Trump's backing

"Big Jim Justice, the Governor of the Great State of West Virginia (I LOVE WEST VIRGINIA!), is BIG in every way, but especially in his wonderful HEART! Strong on the Border, our Great Military & Vets, CLEAN COAL & Energy Dominance, the Economy, Stopping Inflation, & Protecting our 2nd Amendment, Big Jim will be a Great UNITED STATES SENATOR, and has my Complete & Total Endorsementm," Trump said in a Truth Social post.

"HE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!!!" Trump continued.

Mooney falls

"Trump’s endorsement of Justice over Rep. Alex Mooney (R-W.Va.), whom the former president endorsed in a House race last year, is a major political development in a key Senate battleground," the Hill reported.

"Mooney posted a press release of Trump’s 2022 endorsement on his Senate campaign website. But Trump on Wednesday made it clear he wants Justice to win the nomination to challenge Manchin next year if he runs for reelection," it stated.

Trump's endorsement is also big in West Virginia as the former president remains highly popular in the state and won by a large margin among its voters in 2020.

A win for Justice would help in the GOP effort to take back power in the Senate currently held by Democrats.

Manchin and Mooney will both now face a tougher battle to win, with another Trump-endorsed leader on track to win in 2024.
