Trump administration to manage Union Station in DC crime crackdown

Washington, DC’s Union Station, once a grand symbol of American travel, now faces a bold federal takeover. The Trump administration, fed up with the station’s descent into crime and decay, announced plans to seize control on August 20, 2025. This move signals a no-nonsense approach to restoring order in the nation’s capital.

The Department of Transportation, led by Secretary Sean Duffy, will oversee Union Station’s management, partnering with Amtrak and the Union Station Redevelopment Corporation to revitalize the historic hub. Opened in 1907, the station has been owned by the DOT since the early 1980s but managed day-to-day by the USRC, a nonprofit created by Congress in 1981. Years of neglect have left it a shadow of its former glory.

“Instead of being a point of pride, Washington’s Union Station has fallen into disrepair,” Duffy declared. He’s not wrong—crumbling infrastructure and rising crime have tarnished the station’s legacy. The administration’s plan aims to fix elevators, lighting, and the roof while boosting security to make the station a safe, thriving hub again.

Crime Surge Sparks Action

A deadly shooting in February 2025, right during the afternoon rush hour, shocked commuters at Union Station. Conservative pundit Scott Jennings recounted the horror: “I saw a body hit the floor at the bottom of the escalator.” Such brazen violence in broad daylight proves the urgency of the administration’s crackdown.

Jennings, shaken by the incident, added, “I heard the shots and saw the body hit the floor.” His words cut through the progressive spin claiming DC is safe. The reality is grim, and the administration’s response is a direct challenge to that narrative.

Since early August 2025, National Guard troops have been stationed at Union Station and other DC sites. President Trump deployed them to curb the city’s spiraling violent crime. This isn’t just posturing—it’s a tangible step to protect citizens where local leadership has faltered.

National Guard Bolsters Security

On August 13, 2025, Vice President JD Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth visited National Guard soldiers at Union Station. Their presence underscored the administration’s commitment to restoring safety. It’s a stark contrast to the hands-off approach of past DC officials who let the station slide into chaos.

The DOT’s takeover, set to be formalized in September 2025, isn’t just about security. It’s a strategic move to leverage the station’s commercial potential. Improved income from shops and services could fund critical upgrades and even attract private investment for expansion.

Duffy promised, “By reclaiming station management, we will help make this city safe and beautiful.” That’s a tall order, but the plan to partner with Amtrak and USRC shows a practical approach. It’s about turning a crime hotspot into a beacon of progress without woke excuses.

Amtrak’s Role in Revitalization

On the same day as the takeover announcement, Amtrak unveiled new high-speed Acela trains for the Northeast Corridor. These trains, connecting Boston to DC, hit speeds of 160 mph and carry 27% more passengers. It’s a timely upgrade for the nation’s busiest rail corridor, which relies heavily on Union Station.

Five new Acela trains will roll out within a year, with 28 total replacing 15 outdated ones. This modernization aligns with the DOT’s vision for a revitalized Union Station. Faster, bigger trains demand a station that’s safe and functional, not a crime scene.

The Northeast Corridor’s importance can’t be overstated—it’s the backbone of East Coast rail travel. Yet, Union Station’s decline has threatened its role as a key hub. The administration’s plan to boost security and infrastructure aims to keep the corridor humming efficiently.

Restoring a Historic Landmark

Union Station’s history as a 1907 architectural gem makes its current state all the more tragic. The DOT’s focus on fixing major systems like elevators and lighting is a start, but it’s the crime crackdown that will define this takeover’s success. A station where commuters fear for their lives isn’t a station at all—it’s a liability.

The administration’s broader DC crime crackdown sets the stage for Union Station’s revival. National Guard presence is a short-term fix, but long-term investment in security and infrastructure could transform the station into a model of urban renewal. It’s a conservative solution: practical, not performative.

Washington, DC, deserves a Union Station that reflects its status as the nation’s capital. The Trump administration’s takeover is a bold bet that safety and prosperity can replace chaos and decay. If successful, it could prove that common-sense governance still has a place in a city too often paralyzed by progressive policies.
