Trump administration planning massive National Guard deployment for border security

The southern border is about to see a serious show of force. The Daily Caller reported that the Trump administration is gearing up to deploy 20,000 National Guard troops to tackle illegal immigration, a move that’s got progressives clutching their pearls.

In May 2025, the Department of Homeland Security asked the Pentagon for backup to curb unauthorized migration.

The Trump team, never one to shy away from action, is now prepping the National Guard for what could be a historic operation. The Pentagon’s still mulling over the details, but the wheels are turning.

Army Secretary Dan Driscoll and Gen. Randy George spilled the beans during a Senate hearing on June 5, 2025.

They made it clear: the National Guard’s role will stick to legal boundaries, no matter how much the left might cry “overreach.” Actions, it seems, do have consequences.

National Guard’s Border Mission

The National Guard, a unique force answering to both state governors and the president, is no stranger to border duty.

Back under President Biden, several Republican governors sent their Guard units south to handle skyrocketing illegal crossings. History’s got a way of repeating itself, doesn’t it?

DHS data paints a grim picture: 11 million migrant encounters during Biden’s term. That’s not a border; that’s a revolving door. No wonder the Trump administration’s ready to slam it shut.

“The Department is reviewing a request for assistance from the Department of Homeland Security for mission support,” a Pentagon official told the Daily Caller News Foundation. Sounds like bureaucratic speak for “we’re on it.” The Pentagon’s caution is understandable, but the public’s patience is wearing thin.

Polling from February 2024 showed most Americans back using the military to arrest and deport unauthorized migrants.

When you’ve got gang members and violent criminals crossing the border, it’s not hard to see why. The woke crowd might not like it, but the heartland’s had enough.

DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin didn’t mince words: “DHS requested 20,000 National Guard members to help carry out the President’s mandate from the American people to arrest and deport criminal illegal aliens.” That’s a mission statement with teeth. Critics will call it harsh, but safety isn’t a suggestion.

McLaughlin doubled down, saying, “The Department of Homeland Security will use every tool and resource available to get criminal illegal aliens, including gang members, murderers, pedophiles, and other violent criminals out of our country.”

The safety of American citizens comes first, she added. Hard to argue with that, unless you’re more worried about optics than outcomes.

Border Metrics Show Progress

Since Trump took office, the border’s seen some serious wins. By March 2025, border encounters plummeted to a record low of under 7,200. That’s what happens when you stop treating the border like a welcome mat.

Fentanyl traffic, a scourge on communities, dropped 54% by March 2025, per DHS numbers.

You’d think that’d get a standing ovation, but some folks are too busy hand-wringing to notice. Results speak louder than rhetoric.

White House border czar Tom Homan reported 139,000 deportations of unauthorized immigrants since Inauguration Day. That’s not just a number; it’s a signal that the rule of law is back in town. The left’s cries of “inhumane” ring hollow when you consider the chaos they ignored.

Republican Sen. Joni Ernst from Iowa gave the plan a thumbs-up at the Senate hearing, saying, “The more that we can use our soldiers in jobs that are appropriate for our soldiers, I say go for it.” That’s the kind of common sense Washington needs more of. Deploying troops for border security isn’t new, but it’s effective.
