Trump administration goes 'scorched earth' on USAID with mass layoffs amid corruption discovery

The Trump administration has drawn sharp criticism after executing significant layoffs within the United States Agency for International Development, colloquially known as USAID, following counsel from Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

The Daily Mail reported that massive corruption and inefficiency were discovered with the agency disbursing billions to fraudulent and corrupt initiatives leading to merciless layoffs as Trump purges the rot.

The agency, responsible for administering foreign aid, has seen at least 8,000 workers and contractors placed on furlough or permanently let go.

Initially, plans indicated retaining 297 employees, but on Thursday, this figure was amended to 611, primarily focusing on those specializing in health and humanitarian assistance.

As a stark physical sign of the changes underway, crews worked to remove USAID's branding from its headquarters Friday.

The Role of DOGE and Elon Musk

Elon Musk's involvement through DOGE has become a focal point of this development. USAID's downsized workforce results from budget cuts orchestrated by DOGE, which claims fiscal mismanagement within the agency.

These claims have been amplified by a post from former President Trump on Truth Social, where he asserted that USAID's expenditures were "fraudulently" managed and labeled its closure as a necessary measure against corruption.

In reaction to the administration's decisions, USAID's employees, both past and present, have voiced these steps' alarming and unexpected nature. One employee described the layoffs as an experience reminiscent of witnessing "a horror film," while another lamented the perceived impracticality of operating the agency with just a reduced number of staff.

As the layoffs were rolling out, two unions initiated legal action against notable figures, including Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and DOGE officials.

They argue these drastic workforce reductions breach constitutional principles. Robin Thurston, Democracy Forward's legal director, articulates this sentiment by calling the administration's move an "unlawful seizure."

Political figures have also weighed in on the ongoing issue. Rubio, defending the necessity of these actions in a press conference, explained the challenges faced when attempting to gain cooperation from USAID's central offices. He emphasized the administration’s struggles with encountering resistance when trying to halt payments and glean insights into agency operations.

USAID's extensive operations span over 100 countries, with an annual budget of around $40 billion, affecting American businesses involved in supplying foreign aid. Numerous awards and contracts administered by the agency, approximately 800 in total, are set to be canceled.

Furthermore, USAID staff based overseas have been instructed to return to the U.S. within 30 days, although hardship waivers for extended stays may be requested.

While Musk's commentary on social media highlights a belief that taxpayer money should prioritize domestic needs, Rubio reassures that foreign aid will persist. However, he stipulates that future aid will be realigned to reflect national interests more closely, an outlook he has repeated in public statements.

Response From Affected Employees

Amid the controversy and operational upheaval, affected employees express their dismay and skepticism regarding the agency's future viability. One staff member cynically suggested dismantling the agency entirely, pointing to the challenges of functioning efficiently with the significantly reduced personnel.

DOGE's social media account further alluded to the changes by sharing imagery of USAID's building with captions suggesting a new beginning 'unburdened by what has been.'

Secretary of State Rubio aims to maintain foreign aid initiatives, yet in a manner he defines as both rational and beneficial to U.S. interests.

Speaking extensively on this point, Rubio echoes his commitment to restructuring international assistance to align more closely with broader national objectives.

The unwelcome adjustments faced by USAID encapsulate broader debates over government spending, accountability, and the impact of political initiatives on established institutions. As litigation proceeds, these issues promise to remain in the public eye for the foreseeable future.
