USF Athletic Director and former NFL player Larry Williams passes away at 62

Heartbreaking news struck the University of South Florida campus as Larry Williams, a former NFL player turned esteemed athletic director, tragically passed away.

Breitbart reported that the 62-year-old leader collapsed while exercising at the War Memorial Gym on campus last Thursday, leaving a void in the hearts of student-athletes and staff.

Born in California, Williams carved an impressive path from his early days playing high school football at Mater Dei, a nationally recognized program, to earning All-American honors twice at Notre Dame.

Drafted in the 10th round by the Cleveland Browns in 1985, Williams played from 1986 to 1988 before injuries sidelined him for two seasons. He battled back, returning to the NFL in 1991 with the New Orleans Saints and finishing his pro career in 1992 with the New England Patriots.

During his time away from the field, Williams didn’t sit idle—he pursued a law degree, showcasing the grit and determination that defined his life.

Transitioning to Leadership and Legacy

After hanging up his cleats, Williams pivoted to a career in law before circling back to sports, working at Notre Dame in licensing and product marketing by 1999.

His knack for leadership shone through as he took on athletic director roles, starting at Portland in 2004, then moving to Marquette, Akron, and San Francisco before landing at USF.

Williams wasn’t just a suit in an office; he was a mentor who believed deeply in the mission of Catholic education and athletic integrity at USF.

“USF represents to me the almost perfect combination of things I cherish. No. 1, it’s the Catholic identity,” Williams once said, reflecting on his role (University of South Florida).

“And No. 3, it’s athletic participation in an environment that very specifically includes one and two. At this point in my career, there’s almost a vocational element to what I do here at USF,” he added (University of South Florida).

Now, let’s be real—while progressive agendas often push sports into cultural battlegrounds, Williams seemed to anchor his work in faith and education, a refreshing stance in today’s climate of endless virtue signaling.

Community Mourns a Respected Leader

“Our prayers go out to Larry’s wife, Laura, their children, Kristin, Sean, Scott, Eric, and Louis, their families, and his grandchildren,” said University of San Francisco president Salvador D. Aceves.

Such words from Aceves remind us of the personal toll behind the headlines, though one wonders if university leaders will honor Williams’ traditional values or pivot to more trendy, woke priorities in replacing him.

Williams’ passing isn’t just a loss of a leader; it’s a reminder that character and conviction still matter, even if the cultural tide often pulls the other way—let’s hope USF keeps his vision alive.
