Tragic helicopter crash claims family of Illinois GOP candidate

Heartbreak has struck the campaign trail as Darren Bailey, a Republican vying for Illinois governor, mourns an unspeakable loss.

Fox News reported that in a devastating turn of events, Bailey and his wife, Cindy, shared the tragic news of a helicopter crash in Montana on Wednesday that claimed the lives of their son Zachary, daughter-in-law Kelsey, and two beloved grandchildren, Vada Rose, 12, and Samuel, 7.

The announcement came through a poignant social media post, a raw window into the pain of a family shattered by sudden grief. Thankfully, a third child, Finn, was not aboard the helicopter and remains safe, a small mercy in an otherwise crushing tragedy.

The details surrounding the crash are still a mystery, leaving more questions than answers as the family and their supporters grapple with the news.

Meanwhile, the National Transportation Safety Board revealed on Oct. 23 that it’s probing a helicopter incident in Ekalaka, Montana, though it’s not yet confirmed if this is the same disaster that struck the Bailey family.

Campaign Pauses Amid Personal Tragedy

Darren Bailey, a former state senator, is no stranger to the rough-and-tumble of Illinois politics, having previously challenged Gov. JB Pritzker in a 2022 race that didn’t go his way.

Backed by an endorsement from former President Donald Trump at a 2022 rally in Mendon, Illinois, Bailey has been a steadfast voice for conservative values, pushing against what many see as a progressive overreach in the state.

Now, as he campaigns to unseat Pritzker once more, this personal catastrophe has cast a somber shadow over his political fight, reminding us all that some battles are far greater than any election.

Bailey’s campaign shared a statement reflecting the depth of their sorrow, saying, "Darren and Cindy are heartbroken by this unimaginable loss."

They added, "They are finding comfort in their faith, their family, and the prayers of so many who love and care for them," a sentiment that speaks to the strength of community in times of crisis, even as some might scoff at such old-fashioned notions in our hyper-modern age.

Let’s be real—while the cultural left might roll their eyes at faith-based resilience, there’s something undeniably powerful about a family leaning on timeless values when the world falls apart.

Past Threats Resurface in Memory

Adding a darker layer to Bailey’s public life, it’s worth recalling that during his 2022 run, he faced a chilling death threat from a 21-year-old Chicago man, Scott Lennox, who was charged with multiple felonies, including threatening a public official.

Lennox, as reported by authorities and the Chicago Sun-Times, allegedly left a voicemail vowing violence against Bailey, a stark reminder of the hostility conservatives often face in today’s polarized climate—though, of course, such actions are the fault of individuals, not ideologies.

As Bailey’s campaign also noted, "The Baileys deeply appreciate the kindness and support they have received and ask for privacy as they grieve and hold their loved ones close during this difficult time," a request that deserves respect even in our era of constant media intrusion.
