Three killed in tragic Las Cruces mass shooting

A tragic mass shooting unfolded on Friday night, devastating the Las Cruces community when gunfire erupted at an unauthorized car show.

The Dallas Morning News reported that the incident, which took place at Young Park, resulted in three fatalities and 15 injuries, shocking attendees and prompting a swift response from law enforcement.

On Friday night, a car show, which was not officially sanctioned, was held at Young Park, a venue located around 25 miles from the New Mexico-Texas border and 40 miles north of El Paso. The event attracted about 200 car enthusiasts and community members.

Authorities responded swiftly to the shooting, arriving shortly after 10 p.m. Despite the rapid response, the unfortunate outcome was the loss of three young lives: Andrew Madrid, 16; Jason Gomez, 18; and Dominick Estrada, 19. Additionally, 15 more individuals sustained various injuries due to the assault.

At the scene, police discovered between 50 and 60 shell casings from handguns, indicating the involvement of multiple shooters and firearms. The evidence pointed to an incident of significant violence and suggested ill intentions among different groups present.

Response and Investigation by Authorities

Las Cruces Police Chief Jeremy Story commented on the evidence collected, noting the presence of multiple gunmen with numerous weapons involved. The lack of law enforcement presence at the show, due to staffing constraints, was highlighted as a point of concern.

Chief Story mentioned that, although unauthorized car shows are frequent occurrences at the park, there were no officers available that night due to understaffing.

The aftermath of the shooting saw a blend of onsite medical assistance and hospital transports. Seven victims received immediate treatment at the scene, while another eleven were taken to local hospitals or the University Medical Center of El Paso for further care.

By the following day, seven individuals were still undergoing treatment in El Paso, four had been released, and the status of the remaining victims remained undisclosed.

Forensic teams focused on gathering conclusive evidence to aid in the ongoing investigation. Accordingly, Young Park remained closed on Saturday as investigatory personnel worked tirelessly to piece together the events of that tragic night. Videos and other tips from attendees were solicited to help pinpoint all individuals involved in the gunfire.

The investigation led to the arrest of two suspects on Saturday evening. Tomas Rivas, 20, is currently in custody and facing charges of three counts of murder. The second suspect, being a minor at 17, had his identity withheld from public disclosure, reflecting the sensitivity of juvenile legal proceedings.

Authorities are determined to thoroughly investigate the case in collaboration with multiple law enforcement agencies, including the New Mexico State Police, the Doña Ana County Sheriff's Office, the FBI, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Chief Story emphasized the importance of community assistance in resolving the case, urging those with information or footage from the event to come forward. The distribution of evidence is crucial to ensuring that all participants in the violence are held accountable under the full extent of the law.

Impact on the Las Cruces Community

The tragic events at Young Park have reverberated through Las Cruces, leaving a deep impact on residents and highlighting issues of public safety during large gatherings.

Discussions around enhanced security measures and community vigilance during unsanctioned events are likely to arise in the aftermath of this tragedy.

Residents are left grappling with the shock and grief of losing young lives to senseless violence.

The need for communal support and healing initiatives becomes evident as the city mourns and attempts to recover from this harrowing event.

As investigations proceed, the people of Las Cruces remain committed to fostering a sense of safety and unity to prevent such incidents from occurring again. The tragedy serves as a painful reminder of the importance of community awareness and cooperation with law enforcement efforts.
