Tensions flare as bipartisan border deal meets strong GOP resistance

It's truly incredible -- at least incredibly convenient -- that as the November election nears, the White House is suddenly concerned about a deal to secure the southern U.S. border.

After letting millions of illegal migrants pour across the border since his inauguration, President Joe Biden and his administration are laying the blame on the newly-acknowledged border crisis on Congress.

According to the Daily Mail, that's all happening while at the same time former President Donald Trump is influencing some Republicans in Congress, urging them to abandon what he called a "bad deal," -- one that he can't support and wouldn't support as a president.

The bipartisan deal has been met with extreme backlash from many, even as the full text of the deal has not yet been released. Some Senate Republicans are accusing Trump of attempting to "kill" the bill so that it doesn't help Democrats in the general election.

The outlet noted:

Biden said in a written statement on Friday the deal would allow him 'a new emergency authority' to close the border. He added: 'And if given that authority, I would use it the day I sign the bill into law.'

Many, including Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) have disputed the notion that Biden needs Congress to pass a deal before the president has the authority to shut down and secure the border.

"I had the safest and most secure Border in U.S. History. I didn’t need a “Bill!” They are using this horrific Senate Bill as a way of being able to put the BORDER DISASTER onto the shoulders of the Republicans. The Democrats BROKE THE BORDER, they should fix it. NO LEGISLATION IS NEEDED, IT’S ALREADY THERE!!!" Trump wrote in a Truth Social post this week.

Johnson issued a similar statement over the weekend, saying, "President Biden falsely claimed yesterday he needs Congress to pass a new law to allow him to close the southern border, but he knows that is untrue."

No matter what the final details of the bill include, Johnson has doubled down on his insistence that it will die in the House "unless it ends catch-and-release and reinstates the Remain in Mexico program."

Some Senate Republicans, including Sen. Mitt Romney (UT) slammed Trump for intervening.

"The fact that [Trump] would communicate to Republican senators…that he doesn't want us to solve the border problem because he wants to blame Biden for it is really appalling," Romney said.

North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis added, "If we fail to get this passed, I’m going to file exactly the same bill if Trump wins and we have a majority of the Senate. I’ll guarantee you that everybody who’s against it. It’s all about politics and not having the courage to respectfully disagree with President Trump and tell him: ‘This will help him.’ He has requested it before."

Only time will tell if the bill grows legs in the House, but without Speaker Johnson's blessing, it will likely be trashed.
