Tennessee House removes Democrat after gun control protest

The Tennessee House removed a Democrat from office after his involvement in storming the Capitol in a gun control protest last week.

Rep. Justin Jones was one of three Democrats involved in the protest that took over the State Capitol.

The vote

"CNN reported that the Tennessee House voted 75-25 Thursday to expel Jones from the House," according to Breitbart News.

"Votes to remove Reps. Johnson and Pearson are scheduled to follow later Thursday," it added.

The Speaker's words

State House Speaker Cameron Sexton (R) shared his concern about Jones in a tweet following the events.

"We have always welcomed peaceful protestors to the capitol to have their voices heard on any issue," he wrote.

"We have heard the voices of the students, the protestors, and individuals from across the state. We cannot allow the actions of the three members to distract us from protecting our children. We will get through this together, and it will require talking about all solutions," he added.

The White House blasted the removal of Jones. Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre referred to the vote as “shocking, undemocratic, and without precedent.”

Others have referred to the actions of the three Democrats as insurrection, demanding their removal from office.

The GOP-led state legislature is likely to remove the other two Democrats as well, bringing swift justice in a response far different from the Jan. 6 Capitol Building riot.

The Nashville area is frustrated over the recent school shooting that left six people dead and the shooter but storming the Capitol is not a solution for residents or lawmakers.
