A teenage high school basketball player recently collapsed and died on the court during a game. 

Fox News reports that the girl has been identified as 14-year-old Amari Crite.

Crite was a freshman at Momence High School, which is located in Momence, Illinois. She was a member of the school's junior varsity basketball team.

Crite collapsed on the basketball court during a game that took place on Jan. 25, 2024, between her team and Tri-Point. Those who witnessed the incident report that Crite was running back on defense when the collapse occurred.

Emergency medical attention was immediately provided, and attempts were made to revive her on the court. But, these attempts proved unsuccessful, and she was ultimately pronounced dead.

The cause of Crite's passing, at the time of this writing, remains unclear. The Kankakee County Coroner's Office is reported to still be investigating the cause of the girl's death.

In the meantime, the school has released a statement on the matter.

"We are deeply saddened to confirm the heartbreaking news of the passing of one of our 9th-grade students on January 25, 2024. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and friends affected by this tragic loss," Momence Superintendent Shannon Anderson said.

Anderson went on to talk about the efforts that the school is taking to help its community deal with the loss of Crite.

Recognizing the immense emotional impact of this tragedy, the school district has made counselors and mental health support available to those who may be struggling. Anderson emphasized the importance of coming together as a community during this difficult time. “Our primary focus right now is on supporting one another and providing the necessary resources for our community to cope with this loss."

Crite's mother, Michelle Crite, has started a GoFundMe page to help cover funeral expenses. The page can be found here.

It reads:

As some if not all of you may know our precious baby girl passed away last night January 25 when she collapsed at her basketball game. We are asking for any and everyone to help us give her the proper home going she deserves. No amount to small no amount to big. And most of all we need prayer! Services will be shared when everything is arranged.

Michelle Crite started the GoFundMe page on Jan. 26, 2024. She was hoping to raise $15,000.

At the time of this writing, she has already received 851 donations that have amounted to nearly $54,000, nearly quadrupling her initial goal.
