Failed Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams would love everyone to believe that she is above it all, but that is hardly the case.
In 2023, an organization she helped found was accused of committing massive political finance violations.
The investigation resulted in a record monetary fine, and now the organization is going belly up.
This organization was launched by Abrams and was touted as a voting rights organization, but it appeared those involved with it were up to far more than that.
This group played a major role in flipping Georgia from a forever red state to a true battleground state, with Democrats now controlling both Senate seats.
But it turns out that money was being used by the group for other purposes, with Abrams’ hand-picked executive director, Nsé Ufot, putting some sticky fingers in the till.
An investigation alleged that Ufot was using thousands of dollars for personal expenses. It was also discovered that the organization had very sloppy bookkeeping practices, leading to an inability to track significant funds that had been raised.
Earlier this year, the case reached its conclusion, and the organization was fined $300,000 for the violations.
A report on the settlement found that the organization violated rules 16 times, and the fine leveled against the group was the largest in state history.
David Fox, a lawyer for the New Georgia Project, responded to the ruling, "The matter relates to events from more than five years ago, and respondents are eager to put the matter behind them.”
But there now appears to be a problem… the group is out of money.
The organization, which is also linked to Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA), is now reportedly closing its doors for good.
The latest report revealed that the sloppy bookkeeping mentioned above led to not properly accounting for $4.2 million in donations and $3.2 million in expenditures. Keep in mind, Abrams hoped to become the state's governor, so it looks like Georgia really sidestepped a landmine here.
For Abrams, not all is over, as a state Senate committee has also launched an investigation into the group and its ties to Abrams, who clearly still has political aspirations.
I always find it rather entertaining when the loudest voices in the Democrat Party are taken down for exactly what they accuse opponents of doing. As far as I am concerned, the sooner we end Abrams' political career, the better.
