Speaker McCarthy defends Trump after news of a possible second federal indictment

Special Counsel Jack Smith, backed by Attorney General Merrick Garland's Justice Department, could soon hand down a second federal indictment against former President Donald Trump.

News broke earlier this week that Trump could face yet another indictment over his role in the Jan. 6 Capitol protests.

Trump broke the news via Truth Social this week.

"Deranged Jack Smith, the prosecutor with Joe Biden’s DOJ, sent a letter, (again it was Sunday night) stating I am the TARGET of the January 6 Grand Jury investigation, and giving me a very short 4 days to report to the Grand Jury, which almost always mean an Arrest and Indictment," Trump wrote.

According to Breitbart, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) weighed in on the possibility, defending Trump's actions on that day by insisting all the former president did was give a speech and tell his supporters to remain peaceful, which is well documented on video.

"I don’t see how he could be found criminally responsible," McCarthy said. "What criminal activity did he do? He told people to be peaceful."

McCarthy's defense of the former president reminded some social media users of McCarthy's previous comments on Trump and his responsibility for what happened on that day.

The Hill noted:

McCarthy’s defense of Trump marks a contrast to remarks he made shortly after the Capitol attack, when he took to the House floor to declare that Trump “bears responsibility” for the actions of the “mob rioters.”

"The political climate requires it even though he secretly wants him to go away and never be heard from again," one Twitter user wrote.

Breitbart reported that McCarthy had recently spoken to President Trump, noting that the former president was "frustrated" with how the Department of Justice seems to have a never-ending target on his back, which Trump and others claim is a clear political weaponization of the Justice Department.

Earlier this week McCarthy tweeted his thoughts regarding his belief that President Joe Biden's administration has turned the DOJ into a political weapon to take out its most formidable threat in 2024, Donald Trump.

"President Trump just increased his lead in the polls. So what does the Biden Administration do next? Weaponize government to go after President Biden’s number one opponent. This is not equal justice. It’s wrong, and the American public is tired of it," McCarthy wrote.

Many responded to his tweet by demanding that Republican leadership do something about the situation. Only time will tell if they do.
