Soldier from North Carolina identified as third crew member of Black Hawk that hit passenger plane

A devastating midair collision involving a Black Hawk helicopter and an American Airlines flight near Reagan National Airport on Wednesday resulted in the tragic loss of 67 lives. Among those involved was Capt. Rebecca Lobach, a distinguished 28-year-old aviation officer in the Army.

CBS News reported that the collision involving the helicopter left three Army personnel dead, with Capt. Lobach among them, recognized on Saturday for her service and personal virtues.

Lobach, a resident of Durham, North Carolina, had been an aviation officer in the Army since July 2019.

Her accomplishments were numerous, having been awarded several distinguished medals including the Army Commendation Medal and the Army Achievement Medal.

Despite her young age, her career and service reflected her dedication and commitment to her duties.

Details of the Midair Collision

The incident unfolded near Reagan National Airport, just outside Washington, D.C. The helicopter, which departed from Fort Belvoir in Virginia, was undertaking a routine training mission when it collided with a commercial airliner.

Officials described the operation as routine, highlighting an annual retraining of night flights as part of a continuity government mission.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth shared some insights into the military's typical activities, noting both the routine and dangerous nature of such missions. The investigation into the cause of the collision is being led by the National Transportation Safety Board in conjunction with the Federal Aviation Administration.

Among the three soldiers aboard the helicopter were Chief Warrant Officer 2 Andrew Eaves, aged 39, and Staff Sgt. Ryan Austin O’Hara, aged 28.

Capt. Rebecca Lobach's family described her as a beacon of positivity, saying she was "kind, generous, brilliant, funny, ambitious and strong." Such words reflected the admiration and love she inspired among those who knew her.

Lobach's roots traced back to her time at the University of the South in Sewanee. She later completed her degree in biology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her academic journey included participating in the Simultaneous Membership Program, allowing her to engage with both the Reserve Officers' Training Corps and the National Guard.

While serving in the North Carolina Army National Guard, Lobach took on the role of a White House social aide during the Biden administration, where she escorted notable guests like designer Ralph Lauren at significant ceremonial events.

Her military career began in December 2018, with her unwavering commitment evident from her recruitment. Samantha Brown, reflecting on Lobach’s university journey, praised her recruitment and university achievements as indicative of her potential and dedication.

Lobach's commitment to service awarded her the National Defense Service Medal and Army Service Ribbon among other honors. Her contributions while serving the nation were both recognized and celebrated by her peers and superiors.

Aftermath and Ongoing Investigations

Upon recovery operations, authorities identified the remains of two soldiers, including a man and a woman, from the wreckage. Lobach's identification among the deceased brought a more personal note to the magnitude of the tragedy.

As authorities continue to investigate the cause, the military community mourns the loss of its personnel. The incident underscores the inherent risks involved in military operations, even those that are deemed routine.

The collision has not only caused significant loss but has also led to questions concerning aviation safety and operational protocols. The investigation aims to uncover the factors that led to this catastrophic event.

Capt. Rebecca Lobach's life and service remain a testament to her commitment and resilience. Her untimely death serves as a stark reminder of the sacrifices made by military personnel in service to their country.

The military and her community remember her contributions, hoping to honor her legacy while continuing to uphold the values she so deeply treasured. Her story, like those of her peers, continues to resonate with many, embodying the spirit of service and dedication.
