Socialist Georgia mayor arrested on multiple charges

A Georgia mayor was arrested Saturday on charges of trespassing and burglary.

South Fulton Mayor Khalid Kamau, a self-proclaimed socialist, was arrested and later released on an $11,000 bond.

The city's statement

“The City of South Fulton is committed to upholding the law and ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their position, are subject to the same fair and just treatment,” a statement from the City of South Fulton said.

“As the investigation is still ongoing, we are unable to provide further details at this time," it added.

The situation

"I just wanted to see the house," Kamau said. "I do apologize to the owners. I thought it was abandoned."

"Sources told Fox 5 Atlanta that the property owner held Kamau at gunpoint until cops arrived. Police have not confirmed this claim. As officers were escorting the mayor to a police cruiser, the mayor said he apologizes "for the negative attention that this is brought to our city," the report added.

"I hope that the spotlight on our city right now will highlight some of the inequities that have been happening," he told Fox 5 Atlanta.

The homeowner's report

"When officers arrived, the homeowner told them that he received a notification on his phone around 6:52 a.m. that someone had walked onto his property," according to WSB-TV.

"After getting dressed, the homeowner said in the report that he watched the unknown person walk up the driveway of his home toward his lake house," he added.

The mayor later told the outlet that he thanked the police for their service during the situation.

“I do want to thank South Fulton Police and the staff and officers at Rice Street for courteous and professional service throughout the day today,” Kamau told Spruill.

The odd story marks a difficult day for the mayor who was found trespassing on a location protected by a homeowner. Despite the mayor's calm response to the public, the issue could be a problem for him for some time. A court date has not yet been scheduled or released related to the charges.
