Senator Schumer’s (D-N.Y.) political future may hinge on this spending bill, and so far, it is not going very well.
Schumer is likely to run for re-election in the next cycle, but he may be forced out if he cannot salvage something from this shutdown.
Considering three Democrats have already bucked the party line, it is not looking good for Chuckie.
Democrats insist there is no funding for illegal immigrants in their proposals, but that is really semantics.
From what I have read, there is funding for those who are seeking asylum, as well as several other categories that were abused by the Biden administration to make illegal immigrants legal.
As far as Republicans are concerned, they all go into that pot, so there is a lot of wordsmithing going on right now.
For example, House Minority Leader Jeffries (D-N.Y.) stated, “There’s no trust that exists between House Democrats and House Republicans at this particular point in time, given the fact that they’ve consistently tried to undermine bipartisan agreements that they themselves have reached.”
First, let me say this… the idea that the GOP had signed off on bipartisan funding is a complete and utter joke. They got nothing of note in previous bills, but caved so they would not be made out to be the bad guys.
The GOP has done a very good job of framing this. For example, JD Vance stated, "Democrats are about to shut down the government because they demand we fund healthcare for illegal aliens.”
Trump posted, "They want to have illegal aliens come into our country and get massive healthcare at the cost to everybody else, and we don't have it. And that’s, I would say, the number one reason that they want to strike is to get illegal immigrants’ healthcare.”
The media has been running cover for the Dems, claiming that the statements by the GOP are completely false, but again, we are talking semantics here because of the immigration doors opened up by Biden during his time in office.
I figured that Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) would vote with the GOP, but there were two more Democrats who also crossed the line.
Senators Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) and Angus King (D-ME) both voted to support the bill.
Masto still took a shot at Trump, but stated she would never support a shutdown, stating, “This administration doesn’t care about Nevadans, but I do. That’s why I cannot support a costly shutdown that would hurt Nevada families and hand even more power to this reckless administration.”
I honestly don’t see how Democrats can hold out for very long, especially with public sentiment being what it is right now. And if Schumer gets nothing, well, he will likely give AOC a free pass to the Senate if she wants it. I don’t see any way he recovers from this if he gets nothing from the shutdown.
