Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is leading an effort to enact legislation that would counter a Supreme Court ruling that granted former President Donald Trump immunity from prosecution for "official acts" conducted during his term.
NBC News reported that Schumer aims to define Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election as unofficial acts not covered by this immunity.
The ruling, decided in a 6-3 vote along ideological lines, declared that presidents have legal immunity from prosecution for official acts performed while in office.
However, it differentiated these from unofficial acts, which fall outside of immunity protections.
What Schumer is trying to do is senseless as he is attempting to legally circumvent the Supreme Court which isn't within Congress's constitutional purview.
Schumer accused the conservative justices of allowing Trump to commit crimes without facing consequences.
He emphasized that no president should have the power to subvert an election against the will of the people and declared his intention to classify Trump's alleged election subversion efforts as unofficial acts.
“We Democrats will not let the Supreme Court’s decision stand unaddressed,” Schumer stated. “The Constitution makes plain that Congress has the authority to check the judiciary through appropriate legislation.”
Senate sessions resumed after a recess which began a week following the Supreme Court's ruling. Schumer revealed he intends to collaborate with colleagues to develop legislation that would explicitly define Trump's actions related to the 2020 election as unofficial acts.
“We’re doing this because we believe that in America no president should be free to overturn an election against the will of the people, no matter what the conservative justices may believe,” Schumer declared.
