Ro Khanna targets potential fraud in California spending, demands investigation

California taxpayers, brace yourselves: a Silicon Valley Democrat is sounding the alarm on what could be a staggering misuse of your hard-earned dollars. Congressman Ro Khanna, representing the tech-heavy region, has unleashed a scathing critique of state spending under Gov. Gavin Newsom, alleging massive fraud and mismanagement, as the New York Post reports. He’s pushing for congressional hearings and a full audit to uncover the truth.

Khanna’s bold move centers on claims of widespread waste in California’s budget, spotlighting the beleaguered High-Speed Rail project and other troubled programs as evidence of Sacramento’s fiscal irresponsibility.

For hardworking California families and retirees on fixed incomes, the potential financial burden is staggering—estimates of fraud and waste, drawn from state auditor reports and social media buzz, reach as high as $72 billion. That’s money that could have gone to schools, roads, or tax relief, now possibly lost to fake unemployment claims or bloated projects. From a conservative standpoint, every penny must be accounted for, and no politician should escape scrutiny on this.

High-Speed Rail: A Costly Disaster?

Let’s rewind to 2008, when California voters approved the High-Speed Rail project, a visionary plan to connect San Francisco and Los Angeles with a $33 billion price tag and a 2020 start date. Fast forward, and the cost has ballooned to over $128 billion, with service delayed until 2033, per Reuters reporting. Not a single mile of track has been laid, despite Newsom’s office touting 60 structures built and 171 miles in design or construction.

A Federal Railroad Administration report recently highlighted budget shortfalls, missed deadlines, and wildly off-base ridership estimates for this rail debacle. From a populist perspective, this looks less like progress and more like a taxpayer-funded mirage. How many small businesses could have thrived with even a fraction of that cash?

Khanna isn’t mincing words, taking to X to demand accountability. “There needs to be full accountability for the waste and new leadership in Sacramento,” he declared, adding that taxpayers deserve “a detailed receipt” for every dollar spent. Well, congressman, we couldn’t agree more—let’s see those receipts, because vague promises won’t cut it with folks struggling to pay bills.

Khanna Calls for Congressional Oversight

On X, Khanna announced his intent to push for bipartisan congressional hearings in 2026 to investigate high-risk state programs, including California’s, citing illegal payments and eligibility errors. He’s also vowed to champion legislation for an independent audit of the state’s budget. This isn’t just talk; it’s a call to action that resonates with those tired of government overreach and inefficiency.

State auditor reports have already flagged serious issues, like up to $31 billion in fraudulent unemployment claims, unused cellphones piling up by the millions, and zero anti-fraud measures in homelessness spending. For conservatives, this isn’t just sloppy—it’s a betrayal of public trust. Every dollar squandered is a dollar stolen from law-abiding citizens.

Newsom’s spokesperson, Izzy Gardon, fired back, dismissing the $72 billion fraud figure as a “MAGA made-up number." Nice try, but auditor reports and cost overruns aren’t fiction—they’re cold, hard data. Brushing off criticism with buzzwords won’t rebuild trust with taxpayers fed up with excuses.

Newsom’s Defense Falls Flat

Gardon also boasted about “16,000 union jobs” created by the High-Speed Rail project. Jobs are great, but at what cost—literally? When a project’s price quadruples and delivers nothing usable, it’s hard to call that a win for workers or anyone else.

Adding to the mess, California recently dropped a lawsuit against the federal government over $4 billion in revoked rail funds, pivoting to seek private money instead. Sounds like a desperate scramble, not a strategy. Taxpayers deserve better than a state playing catch-up with no finish line in sight.

Meanwhile, Khanna’s crusade for transparency is gaining traction, even as he faces pushback from tech moguls over his proposed 5% wealth tax on billionaires. While conservatives may eye that tax skeptically, his focus on fiscal accountability strikes a chord. Waste isn’t a partisan issue—it’s a problem for everyone footing the bill.

Taxpayers Deserve the Truth

From a right-of-center view, Khanna’s call for oversight is a rare moment of clarity in a state often mired in progressive overpromising. But let’s not give anyone a pass—every official, regardless of party, must face the music if fraud or mismanagement is proven. The working class can’t afford more empty rhetoric.

The High-Speed Rail fiasco and billions in potential fraud aren’t just numbers—they’re a slap in the face to every Californian scraping by. If Khanna’s push for hearings and audits uncovers even half of what’s alleged, it could force a reckoning in Sacramento. That’s a fight worth watching.

Ultimately, this isn’t about left or right; it’s about right and wrong. California’s budget mess demands answers, not spin, and taxpayers shouldn’t settle for less. Let’s hope Khanna’s efforts light a fire under a system that’s long overdue for a cleanup.
