Richard Simmons speaks out after claims he was dying, apologizes over social post

Richard Simmons took to social media to clear up confusion on Monday, retracting an earlier statement where he claimed to be "dying," which had prompted concern among his fans.

In his online message, the 75-year-old former fitness instructor expressed regret for the distress caused by his previous post about nearing death.

The apology

He apologized to his followers, acknowledging that even the media had reached out to him regarding the alarming announcement. Simmons emphasized that his intention was not to convey imminent death but rather to encourage people to appreciate each day they have.

Earlier the same day, Simmons had made a lengthy post on Facebook, revealing, "I have some news to tell you. Please don't be sad. I am... dying." He went on to reflect on the inevitability of mortality, urging his audience to embrace life to the fullest.

He stressed the importance of gratitude, encouraging people to appreciate life's simple pleasures.

“There is something else very important that you must do. Tell the ones that you love that you love them,” he wrote. “Hug those people and children who you really care for. A big hug really goes a long way. If you have time I want you to listen to a terrific song. It is by Tim McGraw it is called ‘Live Like You Were Dying. Live today and don’t forget to pray.”

Questions remain

Simmons did not provide context for his earlier claim of "dying." A close friend reassured People magazine that despite the alarming message, the "Sweatin' to the Oldies" host is in good spirits and in good health.

Although Simmons retreated from the public eye in 2014, he frequently utilizes social media platforms to communicate with his fanbase.

In January 2024, he announced his decision to part ways with his manager and publicist, aiming to lead a more tranquil life and prioritize personal peace.

The fallout

This incident underscores Simmons' ongoing engagement with his fans and his desire to share messages of positivity and well-being.

While his earlier statement caused concern, his prompt clarification reflects his commitment to transparency and reassurance. It also highlights the challenges of managing public perceptions, especially for individuals with a significant following like Simmons.

As Simmons continues to navigate his public image, his actions and statements will likely be scrutinized by both fans and the media until more answers are unveiled about his health.

The response by fans shows that his influence extends beyond the realm of fitness to a generation of people who continue to follow his updates along with the latest controversy.
