A group of Republican Senators have called on Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to stop Senate Democrats from tabling the House's articles of impeachment against DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
The group, led by Senator Mike Lee (R-UT), is demanding that the Senate hold a trial and hold a vote on the articles of impeachment. Democrats desperately want to avoid this and can kill the articles with procedural moves if McConnell rolls over and lets them.
In a post to X, Senator Lee said, "GOP leadership must push for an impeachment trial for DHS Secretary Mayorkas. We cannot allow Chuck Schumer to sweep the Biden administration’s border invasion under the rug."
Now all eyes are on Mitch McConnell, who is well known for his fighting spirit and ability to hold the Democrat Party accountable.
Impeaching Mayorkas has been an objective of the Republican Party for months now and to let it die without a fight in the Senate would be both a massive waste and a disgraceful display to Republican voters going into 2024.
McConnell has become infamous for rolling over and giving in to Democrats at every turn and now he needs to demonstrate that he has a backbone at a pivotal moment.
The House impeached Mayorkas earlier this month making him the first cabinet official in over a 150 years to be impeached by the House of Representatives.
This came on an extremely narrow vote thanks to House Republicans disastrous year that has left them with a handful of votes and zero margin for error when it comes to divisive legislation.
A previous vote to impeach Mayorkas failed because Republicans had no margin for error. All in all, it took everything House Republicans had to secure a successful impeachment of Mayorkas.
This contrasts sharply with the two impeachments of former President Donald Trump which demonstrates Democrats are far better at uniting as a singular entity focused on accomplishing something unlike the Republican Party who's few accomplishments feel like accidents.
McConnell is threatening to scuttle one of the few victories that House Republicans have managed to score and if he lets Mayorkas's impeachment get tables, he deserves to be thrown out of the Republican Party.
While Senator Lee and his compatriots fight to keep the impeachment effort against Mayorkas alive, McConnell's future is very much in question.
Regardless of how he handles this situation, McConnell may not be running for reelection depending on the outcome of the 2024 presidential election.
McConnell has a lot of bad blood with Trump and if Trump beats President Joe Biden in November, many believe that McConnell will exit politics. For Trump supporters, getting a 2nd term of Donald Trump and getting rid of McConnell in the same stroke is a dream come true.
