Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene increasingly turning against Trump

There was a time when you would have never even considered the idea that Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) would go up against Donald Trump.

That time has apparently passed, however, as Greene is starting to become a thorn in the president's side.

The latest evidence of this is the congresswoman's effort to get the Epstein files released, but I think I have figured out what is at the root of Greene's new approach.

Trump for speaker

After Kevin McCarthy was ousted as the speaker of the House, there was a group of House Republicans who were trying to get Donald Trump chosen as his replacement.

While there is no rule that says the speaker has to be a member of the House, that has always been the tradition, which Greene was looking to buck.

At the time, she stated, “The only candidate for Speaker I am currently supporting is President Donald J. Trump.”

She added, “He will end the war in Ukraine. He will secure the border. He will end the politically weaponized government. He will make America energy independent again. He will pass my bill to stop transgender surgeries on kids and keep men out of women’s sports. He will support our military and police. And so much more!”

Not happening

With how loyal Greene had always been to Trump, she thought she was going to be rewarded with a spot in his second-term Cabinet, but that never happened.

Greene was clearly upset, especially when people like Elon Musk and Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. were added to the administration.

They were newcomers to the political landscape, as far as she was concerned, and she wanted to see people who had backed Trump from the outset get such coveted roles, feeling snubbed when she did not receive one.

That, at least to me, was when Greene’s loyalty to Trump started to fade, and she all of a sudden had no problem calling him out when she disagreed with one of his policies.

Bucking Trump

Greene is among the Republicans who have pushed hard for the Epstein files to be released, and she has long been determined to make it happen one way or another.

The lawmaker stated that she spoke with a Trump aide on the matter, noting the president's reluctance on the issue, stating, "I told them, ‘You didn’t get me elected. I do not work for you; I work for my district.’”

She continued, “We aren’t supposed to just be whipped on our votes because they’re telling us what to do with this scary threat, or saying ‘We’ll primary you,’ or that we won’t get invited to the White House events."

Greene has also been steadfast in her opposition to funding the Ukraine war, but now Trump has done a reversal on that as well, so we have to see how she reacts and whether she will fight the president on his new stance. Remember, Greene was among those touting Trump as the “only” person who could work a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine, so will she dare to throw that back in Trump’s face? Just a little something to watch as we get closer to the 2026 cycle.
