Rep. Greene wants to be Trump's Homeland Security secretary

U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) wants to be former President Donald Trump's secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports that Greene indicated as much during a recent stop in Greenville, South Carolina.

Greene was in South Carolina over the weekend to support Trump in the state's Republican presidential primary, which took place on Saturday.

The congresswoman, though, is already looking ahead to a Trump victory in the 2024 general election, which is evidenced by the fact that she is eyeing up a key position in Trump's cabinet.

"I feel very strongly about . . ."

Greene told the press in South Carolina that, while she would be happy to be given any position in Trump's administration, she would be especially happy if Trump chose her to be the his DHS secretary.

"I'd be honored to serve President Trump in his next administration in any capacity that he asks me. But I'm certainly particularly interested in Homeland Security. I think it's the top issue in the country," she said.

According to the DHS website, the agency is responsible for:

counterterrorism, cybersecurity, aviation security, border security, port security, maritime security, administration and enforcement of our immigration laws, protection of our national leaders, protection of critical infrastructure, cybersecurity, detection of and protection against chemical, biological and nuclear threats to the homeland, and response to disasters.

Given all of this, the obvious question is whether Greene is qualified for the job. She says that she is.

"Coming from a background in an executive position, I feel very strong about being capable for that role," Greene said.

The recent impeachment

Recently, the Republican-led U.S. House of Representatives impeached the current DHS secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas, for failing to secure the country's border - particularly its southern border.

Greene played a leading role in this impeachment effort, and it is expected that she will continue to play a key role should the U.S. Senate decide to hold an impeachment trial for Mayorkas.

Newsweek reports:

Should a trial for Mayorkas take place, Greene will have arguably her highest-profile role yet as one of the impeachment managers responsible for presenting the case to convict Mayorkas to the Senate. She is among 11 House Republicans who have been appointed as impeachment managers, according to a February 5 resolution.

It seems unlikely, though, that Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-NY) is going to allow such a trial to take place.

Senate Republicans are trying to force Schumer's hand, but, thus far, Schumer has resisted.
