Putin looking for just one big concession to end war in Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin has made a significant proposal to end the ongoing conflict with Ukraine.

The Daily Wire reported that Putin has suggested Russia gain control over Donetsk, Luhansk, and Crimea in exchange for peace, prompting U.S. President Donald Trump to plan a meeting in Alaska to discuss the matter.

As reported by The Wall Street Journal, citing unnamed European and Ukrainian officials, Putin's proposal was initially communicated during a meeting with Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, in Moscow on Wednesday.

The Russian leader seeks to establish full control over Donetsk and Luhansk, while Ukrainian troops remain engaged in those areas. Concerns are rising among European officials who view the proposal as a strategy by Putin to avoid impending secondary tariffs from the Trump administration.

Trump's Meeting With Putin Scheduled for August

Trump announced a one-on-one meeting with Putin to be held on August 15, 2025, in Alaska. In his announcement, Trump specified that European leaders will not be part of the discussions and insisted on a future meeting between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as well. The talks will also consider potential territory swaps, as hinted by Trump.

The Trump administration has set an end-of-week deadline for reaching a peace deal, though an extension is possible. White House officials underscore Trump's increased pressure on Putin to resolve the three-year conflict due to sustained Russian attacks and substantial casualties.

Last week's repositioning of two U.S. nuclear submarines was a deliberate move following perceived threats from Russian Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev.

In a recent post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump emphasized the importance of the upcoming meeting: "The highly anticipated meeting between myself, as President of the United States of America, and President Vladimir Putin, of Russia, will take place next Friday, August 15, 2025, in the Great State of Alaska. Further details to follow. Thank you for your attention to this matter!"

European leaders remain uneasy about Putin’s intentions, particularly regarding Ukraine's strategically critical regions of Zaporizhia and Kherson.

Their apprehension is compounded by Putin's recent territorial ambitions in Eastern Ukraine. Analysts suggest that Putin may use the peace proposal to divert attention from ongoing regional conflicts.

Speaking to reporters, Trump conveyed optimism about the upcoming discussions. "Putin, I believe, wants to see peace, and Zelensky wants to see peace," the U.S. President stated.

He also acknowledged the complexities involved, adding, "It’s very complicated, but we’re going to get some back and we’re going to get some switched … to the betterment of both."

European diplomats privately admit uncertainty over how the peace talks might affect existing regional alliances and tactical defenses. They continue to monitor the situation closely while weighing potential implications for their respective countries.

President Trump Faces Deadline for Peace Deal

The proposed peace talks in Alaska signify a significant diplomatic engagement aimed at resolving the Ukraine conflict.

President Trump has expressed urgency in addressing the situation, with a focus on definitive actions and outcomes. The international community is paying close attention to this escalation of diplomatic efforts.

Looking ahead, Trump acknowledged the power Putin holds in reaching an agreement. Regarding the deadline, Trump remarked, "We’re going to see what [Putin] has to say. It’s going to be up to him." His approach underscores a willingness to negotiate but with a limited timeframe for action.

With numerous geopolitical implications on the line, the coming days will likely set the stage for further developments.

Ukraine's future, and by extension the region's stability, hinges on the outcome of these crucial talks between Russian and U.S. leadership.
