Federal investigations into New York City Mayor Eric Adams have intensified amid allegations of accepting illegal campaign contributions and gifts from foreign entities.
The Associated Press reported that the investigations may lead to further charges against Adams and possibly others associated with him.
Federal prosecutors are delving into multiple inquiries regarding the alleged corruption involving Mayor Adams.
The probe encompasses Adams’ acceptance of gifts valued at $100,000, which include flights, hotel stays, meals, and entertainment. These accusations date back to Adams’ tenure as Brooklyn's borough president.
During a recent court appearance following his arraignment, Adams faced allegations of using straw donors to funnel donations from prohibited overseas sources into his campaign. His legal team, led by Alex Spiro, has advocated for a trial in March, aligning with a mayoral election deadline.
The investigation further alleges that Turkish officials and businesspeople orchestrated perks for Adams in exchange for influence.
Prosecutors have put forth evidence, which includes records from Turkish Airlines, along with accompanying bank statements, credit card transactions, and communication in the form of campaign filings, emails, and texts, some of which are in Turkish.
A locked cellphone belonging to Adams has posed a challenge for investigators due to the mayor's inability to recall its password. Meanwhile, calls for his resignation have been met with resistance, as Adams continues to juggle his city responsibilities while defending his position.
Governor Kathy Hochul has remarked on the resignation of Adams' advisor, Tim Pearson, choosing to label it a “good first step.”
She underscored that changes were expected, acknowledging the ongoing monitoring of the situation. Hochul has the authority to remove Adams from office and is keenly observing the developments.
In the legal arena, Adams’ defense has moved to get bribery charges dismissed and to probe potential leaks from prosecutors.
The case posits that Adams facilitated efforts by Turkish officials to establish a diplomatic presence, allegedly in receipt of gifts for his role. Adams has countered the accusations, contending that his actions were typical city services.
The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has denied involvement in any internal matters, affirming adherence to international norms. Meanwhile, Adams’ lawyer has argued that the perks do not satisfy the criteria for bribes under federal law and dismissed any notion of prosecutorial leaks, despite extensive media attention.
Adams is facing possible opposition in the upcoming Democratic primary set for June. In light of this, Spiro, his lawyer, is pushing for a rapid trial date preceding the March deadline for candidate certification. U.S. District Judge Dale Ho highlighted the necessity of a speedy trial, particularly given the impending election.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Hagan Scotten has noted the presence of several linked investigations concerning Adams.
Scotten pointed to the manner in which Adams’ ticket purchases were orchestrated as an attempt to show that he was funding his own way.
