Progressive lawmaker faces unpaid condo debt amid lavish campaign spending

Imagine a rising political star, championed as a voice for the downtrodden, yet seemingly ignoring a $3,000 debt on her own luxury Dallas condo while splashing donor cash on Ritz-Carlton stays.

Representative Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) finds herself under scrutiny for an unpaid lien of over $3,000 on her high-end Dallas property, coupled with eyebrow-raising campaign expenditures on luxury hotels and premium transportation, all while contemplating a U.S. Senate run against Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX).

County records, as reported by Fox News Digital, reveal that Crockett owes $3,047.79 to the Westside Condominium Association, with a lien filed on April 11, 2024.

Unpaid lien sparks financial questions

This public notice, accessible via the Dallas County Clerk’s website, indicates Crockett has defaulted on assessments despite repeated demands for payment.

The lien legally binds her property, meaning she cannot sell or transfer the unit until the debt is settled—a fact confirmed by the Dallas County Clerk’s Office, which noted no record of the lien being released as of Tuesday evening.

Crockett’s office, when contacted by Fox News Digital, offered no comment on the matter, leaving questions about her financial priorities unanswered.

Luxury condo, luxury lifestyle?

The condo, purchased by Crockett in May 2014, sits just north of downtown Dallas in the gated Westside Condominiums, a community boasting a pool, clubhouse, and spa-like amenities, per a Homes.com listing.

HOA fees for the complex range from $222 to $403, covering maintenance and utilities, yet Crockett appears to have fallen behind on these obligations despite registering to vote at this address.

While a modest condo debt might seem trivial, it’s hard not to raise an eyebrow when contrasted with her campaign’s lavish spending habits.

Campaign funds fuel high-end travel

Federal Election Commission filings show Crockett’s campaign shelled out nearly $75,000 this year on luxury hotels, transportation, and security across various U.S. cities.

Hotel expenses alone tally up to $25,748.87 since January, including over $4,000 at the Ritz-Carlton, more than $5,000 at the West Hollywood Edition in Los Angeles, and thousands more at posh spots like the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas and The Coco in Martha’s Vineyard.

Transportation costs add another layer of extravagance, with over $2,700 to a Chicago limo service and thousands more to premium car services, all funded by donor contributions.

Political ambitions and past controversies

Crockett’s campaign also spent nearly $50,000 on security, which, while arguably necessary, adds to the perception of a disconnect between her progressive rhetoric and personal financial choices.

She’s no stranger to controversy, having faced backlash for a remark about Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R)—calling him “Governor Hot Wheels”—a comment she later claimed was misinterpreted, though it left many conservatives shaking their heads at the insensitivity.

As she “seriously weighs” a Senate bid against Cornyn, with a decision expected on Dec. 8, per the San Antonio Current, one wonders if this financial baggage will weigh her down. A longtime Democratic strategist didn’t mince words, stating, “The more we learn about Jasmine Crockett, the clearer it is that she’s the worst possible candidate to run for Senate in Texas.” While harsh, it’s a sentiment that resonates with those who value fiscal responsibility over flashy optics.
