President Trump halts Kamala Harris' security detail ahead of book tour

President Donald Trump has yanked Secret Service protection from former Vice President Kamala Harris, a move that’s raising eyebrows and tempers alike.

The Daily Caller reported that on Thursday, Trump issued an order to end Harris’ security detail, effective September 1, 2025, as confirmed by a senior White House official to the Daily Caller News Foundation.

This decision comes as Harris, no longer in the political ring, gears up for a book tour to promote her memoir, “107 Days.” It’s a bold call, but one that aligns with Trump’s pattern of tightening the reins on former officials’ perks.

Typically, vice presidents enjoy Secret Service protection for six months post-office, a courtesy extended by former President Joe Biden before he left the White House.

Trump’s directive overrides that, leaving Harris to fend for herself just months after her vice-presidential tenure ended. It’s a stark reminder of who’s calling the shots now.

Trump’s Order Sparks Debate

“You are hereby authorized to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris,” Trump declared.

The statement is cold, clinical, and classic Trump—cutting through bureaucratic fluff with a machete. But is it a security risk or just fiscal prudence?

Harris’ team isn’t taking it lying down. “Grateful” for the Secret Service’s “professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety,” said Kirsten Allen, Harris’ senior adviser. The gratitude feels like a polite jab, masking the sting of losing elite protection overnight.

Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom, briefed on the decision late Thursday, must be fuming. His spokesperson, Bob Salladay, called it “erratic” and “vindictive,” suggesting Trump’s move is more about settling scores than policy.

Newsom’s team seems to think this is personal, but Trump’s track record shows he’s not shy about slashing privileges across the board.

Trump’s not new to this game—he revoked former President Joe Biden’s security clearances and daily intelligence briefings in February 2025.

He also pulled Secret Service protection from former national security adviser John Bolton in January 2025. It’s a clear signal: loyalty to the MAGA agenda doesn’t extend to lifelong handouts.

Harris, for her part, isn’t planning a political comeback. She announced she won’t run for California governor in 2026, opting instead to hit the road for her memoir. That choice might make Trump’s decision seem less harsh—why guard someone who’s stepping out of the public fray?

Still, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass isn’t buying it. Calling the termination an “act of revenge,” she paints Trump as a grudge-holding tyrant. Her outrage, while predictable, ignores the broader context of Trump’s cost-cutting, anti-establishment ethos.

Security Concerns Loom Large

The Los Angeles Police Department could step in to provide Harris security, but that’s a far cry from the Secret Service’s elite detail.

Harris, now a private citizen with a high-profile book tour, might face risks that local cops aren’t trained to handle. It’s a gamble, and critics argue it’s one Trump’s willing to take to stick it to his opponents.

CNN broke the story first, shining a spotlight on the decision’s abruptness. The timing—right as Harris prepares to promote “107 Days”—feels like a calculated move to keep her in check. Or maybe it’s just Trump being Trump, slashing what he sees as unnecessary spending.

The revocation aligns with Trump’s broader push to dismantle what he views as bloated government privileges. Former officials, in his mind, shouldn’t live on the taxpayers' dime forever. It’s a principle that resonates with his base, even if it leaves Harris vulnerable.

Newsom’s team is already spinning this as a dangerous precedent. Salladay’s “vindictive” jab suggests Democrats will frame this as Trump weaponizing his power. But for MAGA supporters, it’s a refreshing stand against entrenched elites.

Harris’ book tour could become a lightning rod for controversy. Without Secret Service protection, every public appearance carries added risk, potentially turning her memoir’s rollout into a referendum on Trump’s decision. It’s a high-stakes chess move in an already polarized game.
