Poll shows that Trump continues to have massive support from Republicans

Former President Donald Trump continues to dominate the 2024 Republican presidential primary race.

This is according to a new poll that was released on Saturday by the Wall Street Journal. The pollster surveyed some 600 Republican primary voters at the end of August.

What the Journal found is that not only does Trump remain in the lead, but his lead has grown.

Currently, according to the Journal's poll, Trump has 59% of the Republican vote. To put it differently, out of all of the candidates in the 2024 Republican presidential primary field, Trump is garnering 59% of the vote - not a plurality, but a clear majority.

Second place in the poll went to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R). But, DeSantis only received 13% of the vote, placing him 46 percentage points behind Trump. That's a big gap.

Something worth noting is that Trump's lead in this particular poll, from the Journal, has increased by 11 percentage points since April. Additionally, since April, Trump's lead over DeSantis in the 2024 Republican presidential primary race has nearly doubled.

In other words, the Democrats' four indictments of Trump appear to have only made Trump more popular.

No other Republican presidential candidate scored double-digit support on the poll. Fox reports:

Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley received 8% support, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy earned 5% support, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie received 3% support, and former Vice President Mike Pence and South Carolina GOP Sen. Tim Scott both received 2% support.

It really is looking as though Trump is running away with the 2024 Republican presidential primary. Perhaps, he has already run away with it.

Real Clear Politics currently has Trump leading the 2024 Republican field by, on average, 39.3 percentage points, which is not quite as many as the Journal's poll.

But, like the Journal's poll, DeSantis is in second place with 14.3% of the vote - that's compared to Trump's 53.6%. Also like the Journal's poll, no other Republican candidate has managed to reach double-digit support. Third place goes to Ramaswamy with 7.1%.

President Joe Biden is similarly dominating the 2024 Democratic presidential primary field. Considering Trump's and Biden's dominance, many are already looking forward to a Biden-Trump rematch in 2024.

The Journal's poll has the Biden-Trump matchup a tie at 46%. But, when third-party candidates were included, Trump ended up with a one percentage point lead over Biden.

Real Clear Politics also has the Biden-Trump matchup a tie. Biden is, on average, coming in at 44.7%, while Trump is at 44%. Individual polls, however, vary, with some having Trump winning and some having Biden winning.
