Pete Hegseth's chief aide Joe Kasper leaves Pentagon amid internal power struggles

A major restructuring has rocked the Pentagon amidst ongoing internal conflicts, with several high-ranking officials departing following an inquiry into information leaks.

The New York Post reported that this investigation, initially set in motion by a directive from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's former chief of staff, Joe Kasper, has created a charged atmosphere characterized by dismissals, allegations, and debated lie detector tests.

In the past week, Joe Kasper, previously serving as the chief aide to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, transitioned to the private sector amid escalating discord within the Pentagon.

Kasper's exit follows his implementation of a memo that called for a probe into breaches concerning confidential data within the Department of Defense. This inquiry stemmed from allegations that sensitive details, like Elon Musk's March visit to the Pentagon, had been improperly shared with the media.

High-Level Departures After Leak Investigation

As the investigation unfolded, senior figures such as Pentagon senior adviser Dan Caldwell, former deputy chief of staff Darin Selnick, and Colin Carroll, who was chief aide to the deputy secretary of defense, were removed from their positions last week.

The sequence of events began when an angry Hegseth lashed out upon learning that the New York Times had received inside information on Musk’s Pentagon visit.

In response, Hegseth expressed that strong measures might be necessary, hinting at lie detector evaluations for officials of significant authority, such as Adm. Christopher Grady and Lt. Gen. Doug Sims.

Kasper's March announcement laid out that such evaluations were feasible under national security protocols during the investigation. However, it's unclear if any polygraph tests actually took place during these deliberations.

Caldwell, Carroll, and Selnick contend that their discharge was unjust, citing a "turf war" rooted in the perception of encroaching responsibilities.

In their joint statement, the trio declared that they served honorably and protected critical information security during their tenure. They underscored their honorable military service credentials, noting past deployments to conflict zones such as Iraq and Afghanistan.

The statement added that despite their dedication to safeguarding information, they were not given details about what specific allegations were under investigation or whether the inquiry was active or legitimate. This lack of clarity further fueled their belief that the investigation might not have been thorough or equitable.

Dispute Over Investigation Method and Motive

Kasper felt a growing sense of encroachment from Caldwell and Selnick, which insiders suggest contributed to the internal conflict. The investigatory saga, marked by verbal confrontations, particularly Hegseth's reported coarse language towards Grady, suggests deepening divides within the department.

“I'll hook you up to a f–king polygraph!” Hegseth reportedly shouted, underscoring the intensity of the internal strife.

While the troubled environment led to several dismissals and accusations of misconduct, the outcome remains contentious.

The implications of these events remained a topic of speculation, with questions about the genuine motives behind the dismissals and the transparency of the processes involved.

These controversies reflect broader challenges faced by the Department of Defense in maintaining a cohesive leadership team willing to challenge and confront complex issues without descending into damaging personal conflicts.

As the dust settles from this turbulent episode, the Pentagon must address both internal cohesion and safeguarding national security interests.
