Obama criticizes Israel over Hamas response

Former President Barack Obama criticized Israel for its response to Hamas in Gaza.

Though condemning the Hamas terror attacks, Obama is now speaking out against the Israeli response.

Obama's statement

"The Israeli government’s decision to cut off food, water and electricity to a captive civilian population threatens not only to worsen a growing humanitarian crisis; it could further harden Palestinian attitudes for generations," Obama wrote.

He added that the response could "erode global support for Israel, play into the hands of Israel’s enemies, and undermine long term efforts to achieve peace and stability in the region."

Biden's efforts

"Biden has called for Israel to follow the rules of war, and said last week that he 'cautioned the government of Israel not to be blinded by rage' in its response to the attacks," the Daily Mail reported.

"There have also been reports that the administration has been urging Israel to think through a potential ground invasion of Gaza," it added.

The big picture

"During his presidency, Obama often backed Israel's right to self-defense at the start of conflicts with Palestinian Islamist group Hamas in Gaza, but quickly called for Israeli restraint once Palestinian casualties mounted from airstrikes," Reuters reported.

"Gaza, a 45 km-long (25-mile) strip of land that is home to 2.3 million people, has been ruled politically since 2007 by Hamas, an Iran-backed Islamist group, but faces a blockade from Israel," it noted.

Despite Obama's upbeat language, the recommendation is far from positive. The words come as Hamas terrorists killed over 1,300 Israelis in the worst attack on Jews since the Holocaust.

The retaliation is targeted to put an end to Hamas, warning civilians to flee from conflict areas. The large numbers of casualties noted among those in Gaza are already under scrutiny as being inflated, especially after a false claim of Israel attacking a Gaza hospital that supposedly killed "hundreds" yet was due to Palestinian terrorists.

The former president continues to meddle in Middle East politics but this time is far from accurate in his portrayal of Israel and Hamas.
