NYT Reporter says if SCOTUS bans abortion pill it will ruin the GOP's chances in 2024

An opinion writer for The New York Times asserted that it could spell trouble for the GOP if the Supreme Court sides with conservatives on an abortion pill.

Kara Swisher said Saturday on CNN’s “The Chris Wallace Show” that if the nation's high court strikes down the abortion pill the Republican Party will “lose everything” in the 2024 election, as Breitbart News reported.

Host Chris Wallace kicked off the contentious issue saying, "I want to bring up one other thing, we’ve only got a minute left in this segment, Kara.

"If there weren’t enough, the Supreme Court has decided to jump in and hear the case about mifepristone, which is one of two pills that women take.

"It turns out that taking the abortion pills accounts for a majority, more than half of all abortions in this country."

Swisher responded saying, "That is correct."

The host followed up, asking "So the Supreme Court, sitting there in their black robes, is going to sit there and decide whether or not the FDA was right when it extended several years ago, it opened up more access to this drug.

"Should judges be second-guessing the FDA about whether or not it’s safe to take a drug?

The New York Times writer responded saying, "This is going to be explosive depending on decision. If they ban it, I think the GOP is going to lose everything, because I think people, there’s no — there is the most important access to abortion for many women.

"And I think it is just one of these issues where people are — there’s going to be exception after exception after exception, there’s going to be Kate Cox, and Kate Cox and Kate Cox, and it’s going to be a problem for the GOP."

This discussion comes about 18 months after the nation's high court shocked the country, overturning Roe v. Wade.

The abortion protection decision that made abortion a federally protected right for almost 50 years.

Justice Samuel Alito wrote for the Supreme Court in Friday’s 5-4 decision:"Abortion presents a profound moral question. The Constitution does not prohibit the citizens of each State from regulating or prohibiting abortion. Roe and Casey arrogated that authority. We now overrule those decisions and return the authority to the people and their elected representatives."

The 1973 Roe v. Wade decision was a 7-2 ruling which decided that the U.S. Constitution included a constitutional right to abortion, despite it not being found in the text, structure, or history of the Constitution.
