Former New York State Assemblyman Dov Hikind has switched his party affiliation to the GOP, Breitbart reported. Hikind, who is Jewish, spent his political life as a Democrat but now believes his party turned its back on its constituents. 

Hikid made the announcement via a video posted to social media Thursday. "IT’S OFFICIAL: My wife and I have switched our party affiliation from Democrat to Republican!" Hikind tweeted as the video's caption.

"Ppl have long been asking, 'Dov, when are you gonna leave the Democratic Party?' Well, the time has come bc the Dems have turned their back on Jews & Israel, so it’s officially done!" he added.

This is not the first time Hikind has spoken out against the Democrats. He endorsed former President Donald Trump in his 2020 reelection bid as well as other Republicans who support Israel.

The former assemblyman is the founder of Americans Against Antisemitism, which is dedicated to eradicating violence and discrimination against the Jewish people. Democrats have withdrawn their support for Israel and, by extension, the Jews, which has left Hikind with no choice but to defect.

"I have been a lifelong Democrat — my family, my parents," Hikind said in his video. “But that’s over. That’s finished," he continued.

"I have decided to register as a Republican. Unfortunately, the Democratic Party has become so radicalized…that people who are moderates or conservative Democrats are not welcomed in the Democratic Party," Hikind charged.

"And I’ve had enough," Hikind added. "The Democratic Party turns its back on its friends like Israel, the Biden administration, right now, in policy after policy. I'm just tired; I've had enough."

"It took a long, long time, but I'm delighted to join the Republican Party, Shani," Hikind said, addressing his wife, who was seated beside him. She then began to speak about her own feelings on the matter.

"As am I. I’m totally convinced that this is the right move … The Democratic Party no longer represents our interests, what we stand for, and our values." Shani Hikind said.

"This is not a party that represents our values, what we believe in, how we feel about America, its history," Shani Hikind later said. Her husband interjected that it's about "sending a message" that Democrats and President Joe Biden are "losing the American people because you're not representing our values."

The couple then discussed whether Dov Hikind will run for office again after making this switch and impassioned speech. "We shall see what the future will bring," the former assemblyman said.

Democrats have faced charges of anti-semitism from the GOP for their opposition to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Fox News reported. To combat this, Biden has reluctantly agreed to invite Netanyahu to the White House later this year.

The Democratic Party has lost its way in the eyes of many voters, especially when it comes to America's relationship with Isreal. However, a politician defecting from the party shows how far they've fallen.
