New Jersey Muslims mobilize against longtime congressman over Israel stance

Rep. Bill Pascrell won his last major primary contest by 20 points as Arab Americans rallied behind the New Jersey Democrat.

Now the same constituency is likely against him as he campaigns for re-election, threatening the 14-term House member's vote on the Israel-Hamas war, as POLITICO reported.

Arab Americans rallied outside his Paterson district office, home to Little Ramallah, the largest Palestinian American neighborhood as well as attending press conferences demanding a cease-fire and interrupted a fundraiser last week to criticize his pro-Israel stance.

Arab Americans have also made it known they plan to mobilize against the 86-year-old when he runs again next year. Former fans now brand him a “charlatan” and “mouthpiece for the dehumanization of Palestinian people.”

They assert a belief that Pascrell's indifference to Israel's Gaza offensive and failure adequately support a cease-fire has made them consider supporting other Democratic candidates in June.

“You can’t call yourself a friend of the community and then turn your back on them,” said Feras Awwad, a local school board member in the city of Clifton whose grandparents hail from Ein Karem, a village outside Jerusalem. “There’s not a chance in hell anybody’s going to be supporting him.”

After Hamas' Oct. 7 attack on Israel, Pascrell's 9th congressional district's mounting animosity seems to reflect the Democratic party's greater fault lines concerning the war.

National politicians have struggled to support Israel's right to defend itself, despite the incursion into Israel by the terrorist-run forces, and the left has pressured Israel to stop their defense of their land.

“I can’t control the politics of Israel,” he said, according to a video of his remarks obtained by POLITICO. “But they have every right to protect themselves and defend themselves. Case closed.”

Arab Americans are an important demographic to Pascrell, but they are a small group in a district with two dozen municipalities in mainly Jewish Bergen County. That makes it impossible for the representative to please all Democrats.

Pascrell has tried to balance rhetoric since the Oct. 7 attacks. He supported a “humanitarian pause” and increased supplies to Gaza, but like other House members, he did not sign a cease-fire resolution and only New Jersey Democrat Reps. Bonnie Watson-Coleman and Donald Payne Jr. supported the measure.

Pascrell has called for captive release and “good faith efforts” between Palestinians and Israelis to negotiate a two-state solution in public speeches and White House correspondence. Until then, he advised “restraint to protect innocent civilian lives” as the best course.

“I hear and feel powerfully the anguish of our community and like millions of Americans I desperately want a permanent end to the fighting as soon as possible and a major flow of humanitarian aid provided by America to protect Palestinians and begin the rebuilding of Gaza,” Pascrell told POLITICO.
